1) Empowering is a great principle that uses emotions by connecting to a student's culture. Using various resources and personal stories helps the students see themselves reflected in their learning.
2) The Emancipatory principle makes me think of assimilation. Assimilation was the goal of education for many decades, but this principle seems to shatter that process. Making learning accessible and authentic to all students is a liberating process.

I think it’s so important to empower our students because I know that students can feel “othered” in a negative way, and we need to celebrate our students and see their backgrounds and differences as an asset.

Comprehensive can be done by group projects and group work. Empowering can be done by allowing students to share their ideas in the classroom such as having discussions about math problems.

I like both of these ideas because the provide students with a way to feel a sense of belonging in the classroom community. Also, achieving this makes students more likely to open up to you as a teacher

Empowering: amplify student voice by presenting their artwork to the community, publishing, etc
Validating: Acknowledge racism and their experiences. Also acknowledge the importance of race and ethnicity. Being color blind does not validate students’ experiences.

A.J. Albert Transformative: allowing students to use alternative methods of completing art assignments. Art is about flexibility and creativity. If a student can express themselves in a different manner more effectively, then I can work to incorporate and accept that method as opposed to what was assigned. Empowering: I did not think of myself as a good students growing up. I didn’t think I could learn, which made me not care. Building my students up, helping them see their potential is my goal as an educator. A great thing about art is that you can see the benefit of your hard work. Progress is notable from assignment to assignment, because art is so visual.

Validation is one that caught my attention that I think it is important because every student is coming into our classrooms with their own culture. Using their cultural knowledge and building on their experiences in life and in science will give them a frame of reference during lessons that will give them a deeper understanding of the subject because they can connect the dots on their own. I think by doing this, this will empower the students as well. I think it is imperative that students feel empowered to try and expand their knowledge while in our classes. Majority of the time trying new things involves failing, but if we empower our students to help them reframe failure to just being a basic part of learning, they will see learning as a continual process rather than a means to an end.

The two principles that I feel I can use presently are validation and empowerment. As someone currently teaching Spanish, I find myself seeking opportunities to present different ways of speaking to my students in order to expand their understanding of how broad Spanish can be. This stems from my experience exploring the linguistic differences among Spanish varieties. The common metric by which Spanish language tends to be evaluated is that of dominant varieties (Spain & Mexico) meaning that it can exclude students who come from and speak other varieties. In my own classroom, a form of empowerment and validation will continue to be done through projecting positive attitudes of all spoken varieties of Spanish so that students may come to recognize that their form of speaking is in fact, valid.

Ian Koehler– CRP principle Empowering is one that stands out to me because it is why I feel literacy is central to CRP practices. Knowing that students have, collectively, a wealth of knowledge and funds to draw upon to contribute to discourse and support each others understanding encourages me to remain relevant in my instruction and emphasize process over content. If students can find ways to represent their voices in the pursuit of their own interests, in time our society will begin to reflect those interests.

As a white teacher I believe it to be critically important to have emancipatory value in the foundation to the classroom. Students need to feel safe and respected in the classroom. In doing so student will be more engaged and learn more in the classroom. A way of doing this is creating a student Bill of Rights giving students agency when in school. This would lead to empowerment of my students. Giving and teaching student about using power and giving that power to other people. We want our students to have the power and experience making choices and building their own identities.

As a 7th year practical arts teacher, immigrant and bilingual, it's most organic for me to empower my students by acknowledging, honoring, appreciating who they are, where they come from, what their strengths are and all that they can contribute. Comprehensive is the most challenging for me, as I'm still learning to be an authentic individual and teacher.

Hopefully as an future art instructor I will be able to empower students by incorporating topics that interest them and hopefully align with their cultural knowledge. (e.g. art project that takes into account cultural background). While I hope to validate these projects with research and not necessarily go against what the culture may have intended. I also hope to utilize my students funds of knowledge and perhaps even allow for some projects to be led with this in mind.

Empowering: I am a fan of the empowering principle because students are able to further motivate themselves when they feel a sense of achievement. Especially when it comes to English, I feel we get stuck in teaching the literary canon and this makes student feel that they cannot read or write well when they cannot emulate/comprehend these writing styles. By empowering students to find their own voices as well as help them find acceptance in bringing cultural writings of their own into the classroom, thus making a space to celebrate all backgrounds.
Validating: I think validating goes hand in hand with the empowering principle as English has so many different forms and dialects we are beginning to finally realize how important these other forms outside of academic English can be of value to the language. AAVE is beautiful and was ridiculed for decades and now it is being used by many (for better or for worse which is another discussion). But this is just an example of how the lexicon can be pushed forward with validating all dialects in the English language.
