From his Instagram I learned that he is a father of two beautiful kids, he is trying to inform people about the asian hate crimes that have been going on recently, which I highly support. I also found out that he has written more than one book. The book was published 6 years ago. It is famous for having the war being brought up while also making the book personal in many ways. The author makes sure that people are able to feel the emotions because he lets us know he is an immigrant and he too went through many struggles. He talks about how he went to visit Vietnam in 2002 after years of going to the United States. He explains that he was scared to go back, but due to his research for his book he needed to go back to Vietnam. The protagonist begins to spy on the Southern Vietnamese General after his home, Saigon has fallen. He travels to California and keeps in touch with his handler, the Commissar because he keeps him updated with the situation in the US. In this book, it is difficult to know in what side is the main character on, but I realized that he is trying to be trusted by both the North and South to not get caught nor killed, which makes me more aware of why he says he has "two minds". He then gets hired to be a consultant for the movie, The Hamlet. The director of the movie makes the protagonist feel like his ideas and inputs to the movie are irrelevant by not adding them into the movie or by switching up his perspective. This makes it clear that the director of the movie does not approve of him and makes the narrator believe that he even tries to kill him when he is almost in limbs by an explosion that goes off when it was not supposed to. After this, he still continues to work in the US and goes back to Vietnam and he becomes a prisoner and tries to confess all of his wrong doings. The very beginning makes it clear to me that he is not seen as a part of his family only because he is Vietnamese, French, but most importantly an immigrant. The most affected part of a persons development is their childhood because I believe that it makes them who they are later in life. Him feeling uncared for or unloved, it makes him want to do better in life so they can later see that he is not stupid or a bastard like they would call him when he was little. He shows them that he can go to college and becomes a spy and a man with two minds that makes him feel superior since he sees the two sides of every view. By working for both the North and the South it makes him unable to have one clear answer and it is difficult to know on what side he is on when his key to survive is being friendly with both sides. If he would have felt more at home with his family them maybe he wouldn't have left his home town nor been a Spy which would have made him a man with only one mind. "Movies were America's way of softening up the rest of the world, Hollywood relentlessly assaulting the mental defenses of audiences with the hit... It mattered not what  story these audiences watched. The point was that it was the American story they watched and loved, up until the day that they themselves might be bombed by the planes they had seen in American movies." This quote was interesting to me because I agree with this quote because Americans do love seeing a great war movie due to the actions and emotions it brings. But, if this wasn't a movie and if the Americans were the ones to be bombed or killed then that is when they will not approve of those actions. 
2. "A spy's task is not to hide himself where no one can see him, since he will not be able to see anything himself. A spy's task is to hide where everyone can see him and where he can see everything." In this quote it makes me understand why he is working for both the North and South without having to hide from either or since it would be easier to get information from them by being present than by hiding from them and possibly getting caught. If he is in both sides without them knowing, it would be best for him to pretend that he is just on one side and less likely to get caught.
3. "The only problem with not talking to oneself was that oneself was the most fascinating conversational partner one could imagine. Nobody had more patience in listening to one than oneself, and while nobody knew one better than oneself, nobody misunderstood one more than oneself." I agree with this because you are the only person who is in control of yourself and your thoughts. If you know your reasons to your actions and believe that your actions were at your best abilities than no one can say you did not do your best, especially without them not having gone through it. He comes off as a very smart guy with an open mind and also makes the book funny by adding dark humor. He went through mixed emotions and feeling left out as a little kid, which made me relate to him because I also felt left out as a child with my nieces and it makes you wonder why you get treated differently as well by family members. I can also relate to this character because I am Mexican since my parents were born in Mexico and I was born here which makes me also an American, therefore making me feel curious about their background and experiences as much as mine and how different my parents lives were compared to mine. I really thought they would have had each others back since they are both Vietnamese and would have a way better chance at beating the US together than separately. The fact that children and women need to go through this as well, experiencing this traumatic time. I believe that even hearing gun shots or running away from something triggers memories like these and makes it hard for victims to get past this trauma of the war.
