Chapter 2 was quite a confusing chapter. I am wondering why Tom takes Nick to see his mistress. Why do they get a dog? Why does Tom hit Myrtle? What exactly happens during the ellipses at the end of the chapter? What is the whole deal with the "no divorce" situation? Why does Tom not leave Daisy?

Daisy knows she is being cheated on but she still stays with him because he has money and she needs to be able to support her daughter. Tom likes to show that he has power. He abuses both Daisy and Myrtle, Daisy on her pinky and Myrtle by breaking her nose. He doesn't abuse Daisy as much because Daisy knows more people and is a higher social class. She is able to take more action against him if she actually has proof of the abuse. He hits Myrtle on the nose because she won't do as much about it and is also his sidepiece.
