First graders use manipulatives such as base ten blocks, counters, linking cubes, ten frames, rekenreks to model addition and subtraction. We also use tools such as number bonds, number lines and ten frames. Addition strategies that are taught and discussed during number talks in first grade include counting on, making 10, doubles, doubles plus 1, 10 more 10 less. We use ST Math and models to teach conceptual understanding of numbers.
