At the beginning of the novel, the portrait is a beautiful representation of Dorian. He wishes that he could be as beautiful as the portrait that portrays him because it will never grow old. Dorian does not realize the magic that the portrait contains.
"How sad is it! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young. It will never be older than this particular day of June... If it were only the other way!" (P. 25)

Changes begin

Towards the end of chapter seven, Dorian becomes disgusted with who he thought he loved, Sibyl Vane. When he sees her performing badly in a show, he approaches her with disgust and expresses how he cannot love her anymore. This breaks Sibyl's heart and Dorian returns home. When he arrives, he finds that his painting has aged and become a distorted image of what it previously represented. This image represents what he sees because it is a slight, but significant, change to the original image.
"There were no signs of any change when he looked into the actual painting, and yet there was no doubt that the whole expression had altered. It was not a mere fancy of his own. The thing was horribly apparent." (P. 77)

Basil's Death

In chapter thirteen, Dorian leads Basil to a room where he sees the drastic changes that have occured to his painting. Basil is horrified at the sight and with the realization that Dorian has changed entirely. Dorian then murders Basil when he tries to convince him to ask for forgiveness. This again alters his portrait completely. This image is representative of the portrait at this point in the novel because it shows the worst things that Dorian has done. He has become a horrifying and unrecognizable person.
""Dorian Gray glanced at the picture, and suddenly an uncontrollable feeling of hatred for Basil Hallward came over him, as though it had been suggested to him by the image on the canvas, whispered into his ear by those grinning lips." (P. 132)

The End

In chapter twenty, Dorian finally decided that the portrait should have a positive change this time due to his change of actions. Although, when he reveals the painting to himself, he sees that nothing has changed, except that the portrait appears to be mocking him. In a fit of rage, Dorian attempts to shred the painting with a knife, which only results in his death. This image is representative of the portrait at the end of the novel because it has taken on Dorian's worst qualities. It has taken the form of the monster that Dorian truly was.
"Lying on the floor was a dead man, in evening dress, with a knife in his heart. He was withered, wrinkled, and loathsome of visage. It was not till they had examined the rings that they recognized who it was." (P. 184)
