I thought the part about how she mistakenly grouped the ELL students together was important. It seems to be a natural thing to do since they can communicate clearly with each other, but as the article stated this does take away from opportunities to learn English from the other classmates. A good balance would be ideal.

They need to be included as much as possible and need the same level work as their peers, they don’t speak English yet but that doesn’t mean they need to fall behind academically. And as much as possible we need to make them feel part of the community

This is tough! I think as an educator, my thought isn’t to make them feel secluded at all. Instead I often find times where I can build relationships and bonds with them. However, when we aren’t provided the right resources or amount of time to help, it becomes hard and they do become forgotten.

As a teacher, you try to make accommodations for EB students by translating papers/worksheets, partnering them up with students that can explain the material in their language, etc. but the student will feel left out when the teacher is teaching and not translating everything.
