Both aligators and crocodiles are cold blooded reptiles, and they metabolize quite slow so they get hungry less often, also they are environment dependent, which means when it's warm, they are more active. But when it gets a little cool, they will move less or become inactive during the coldest months.

My friend once had a pet alligator, and it was quite scary when it was feeding time. The gator ran towards him as we jumped on a higher ground so it could not bite our feet. Any intentions on getting a pet crocodile or a alligator for me had gone out of the window by then.

It is a pain having a pet alligator or crocodile.
- First, reptile pets will never be the same level of interactions like a pet dog or a house cat according to Saferpets research. The lizard's brains are too stupid to be proper pets. They won't recognize the owner unless you spend at least 15 years with them.
- Second, the problem will literally get bigger as time passes. It'll be very hard to feed it and get a proper space for it to live comfortably. If you randomly release it into the river anywhere in Asia, it will become a hand bag or a meal for the guy who catches it.
- Third, those reptiles can live very long. So basically, you're stuck with a lizard that may lives up to 100 years.
But not all hope is lost, i'd recommend getting an alligator as a pet instead of a crocodile, because gators are smaller and less dangerous than crocodiles as years go by. They are still aggressive and you still have to be careful around them. They're like angry geckos that you often find in many houses in SE Asia.

How to tell them apart

- The most obvious difference between them is their snout shapes. As you can see from the photo, alligators have shorter U shape snouts, while crocodiles have pointy, longer snouts.
- The next difference is the teeth, or how their teeth are exposed. Gators have their mouth shut so the teeth are a little bit hidden. But the crocodiles teeth are shown when they shut their jaws, which is pretty cool looking and menacing.
- The last obvious thing that differentiate them are their skins. More specifically, crocodile skin is lighter color than alligator. The lighter skin helps them decrease the temperature that strong high noon sun light emits because they often live in hot or warm climate. Alligator skin is a bit different in that they have dark color and some dark spots to help them camouflage in the dark water lake or river. And because they live in damp swamp, places that have lower sun light the dark color skins help them regulate their body temperature and keep them warm.
