This term, we will be developing our skills through rugby, football and hockey. We will work on our fitness, coordination, communication, teamwork and fluency, while learning how to work together, follow rules and develop our skills through games and activities. We will also be encouraged to challenge ourselves, celebrate our successes and support one another. PE Days are on Tuesday and Friday.

Zones of Regulation

Primary 4 have been introduced to the Zones of Regulation, a wellbeing approach that helps us recognise and understand our emotions. We will use our class Zones of Regulation display to check in with how we are feeling and identify which zone we are in. Together, we will continue to develop a toolkit of strategies that can help us manage our emotions and feel ready to learn. We will learn that all emotions are okay and that it is the strategies we use to manage them that can help us feel and learn at our best.

UNCRC – Our Rights

We will continue learning about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and what our rights mean in everyday school life. As a class, we have chosen four key rights that are particularly important to us and have used these to create our class charter. We will explore what these rights look like in practice and how we can respect and uphold the rights of others within our school community.

This term, we will be developing our skills as confident and reflective readers! Through our reading groups, we will explore a range of texts and develop important reading skills and strategies. We will learn to think more deeply about what we read by making predictions, asking questions, clarifying unfamiliar vocabulary and summarising key information. We will be encouraged to share our thoughts and opinions, make connections and reflect on our own understanding as we continue to develop a love of reading. We will also be regularly visiting our school library and Ratho’s local library!

Writing:

This term, we will be exploring a range of different writing styles and genres. We will develop our imaginative writing skills by creating engaging stories and using descriptive language to bring our ideas to life. We will also explore factual writing, linking our learning to our topic on the Human Body. Throughout our writing, we will focus on developing our ideas, vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation and ability to write for different purposes and audiences.

Listening and Talking:

We will continue to develop the important skills needed to communicate confidently and effectively with others. Children will practise listening carefully, taking turns, sharing ideas and responding appropriately to others. We will also develop our confidence when speaking in front of the class through regular discussions and presentations.

Spelling and Handwriting:

We will continue to develop our spelling knowledge through regular practice and activities, exploring spelling patterns, sounds and strategies to help us become more confident and accurate writers. Regular cursive handwriting practice will also help us to develop clear, neat and fluent handwriting.

This term, we will be developing our confidence and understanding of numbers! We will be exploring place value and learning about the value of each digit within a number. We will practise reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers and use our understanding to solve a range of problems. We will also be developing our skills in addition and subtraction, exploring different strategies and methods to help us calculate accurately and efficiently. Through practical activities, games and real-life problem-solving, we will be encouraged to explain our thinking and choose the strategies that work best for us.

Topic Maths:

This term, we will be exploring the world around us through measure and data! We will be developing our understanding of different types of measurement and learning how to estimate, measure and compare accurately using appropriate units and tools. We will apply our learning to real-life situations and practical investigations. We will also be collecting, organising and interpreting information. We will explore different ways of presenting data, including tables, charts and graphs, and use this information to answer questions, spot patterns and draw conclusions.

This term, we will be exploring the work of different artists! We will discover a range of artists, styles and techniques and learn about what makes each artist's work unique. We will experiment with different materials and approaches, taking inspiration from the artists we explore. Rather than simply copying an artist's work, we will use their styles, techniques and ideas as inspiration to create our own original artwork. We can't wait to see where our creativity takes us!

RME:

This term, we will be learning about Christianity. We will explore how Christians express and demonstrate their beliefs through prayer, worship and special ceremonies. We will discover more about some of the traditions and practices that are important to Christian communities. As we learn about Christianity, we will also develop our understanding and respect for the beliefs, practices and traditions of others. We will have opportunities to ask questions, share our ideas and learn about the different ways people express their beliefs.

A little reminder: Please make sure your child comes to school with suitable clothing and footwear for outdoor learning. We will be outdoors in a range of weather conditions, so waterproofs, warm layers and sturdy footwear are particularly important!
