When a nurse has a sense of "possibility" it is anticipating the condition of a patient and how the condition will evolve throughout the day. Sense of "possibility" is a common meaning among nurses working with common issues. Nurses can use family input and patient responses to help formulate a sense of "possibility".
Example: A patient who was a recurrent admission was given discharge instructions on medication compliance. The patient came back frequently due to complications from not adhering to the medication regimen. A sense of possibility was formulated that this patient would be back and in worse condition than before.

An expert nurse differs from a novice nurse mainly in their clinical expertise. A novice nurse will have to base his or her decisions mainly on learned information whereas an expert nurse is able to pull from past clinical experience. It is not possible for a novice nurse to have the same clinical expertise as an expert because that is only acquired through direct clinical experience, not theory or other learning. An expert nurse will have more sound assessment and practical skills in comparison to a novice. A novice is “limited and inflexible” (p.21) where as an expert nurse is the opposite.

Example: There was a patient who appeared to be cyanotic in his bed. The novice nurse wanted to check the pulse oximetry before taking action. When the nurse did not take initial action the patient decompensated greatly and a rapid response was called. An expert nurse would have most likely used his or her clinical expertise and taken action first, such as applying oxygen.
