Light within the story represented purity. Pure in which one is free of sin. In relation to the Scarlet Letter A, it served as a consolation for Hester. It is seen in Chapter 18 when she takes the letter off, she finally feels comfort and peace. Light was seen as a goal for Hester, which brought meaning and motivation for her to keep moving forward.

Light throughout the story represented purity. Exemplified by Pearl, since she is "free of sin". She is in contrast with her parents Dimmesdale and Hester, where they have been in living in darkness because of their sin. In page 180 Pearl is surrounded with light from sunshine, however, once her mother steps in, the light vanishes. This shows that Hester does not have purity like Pearl, which is seen when the light vanishes.

"Hester is not perceived as an evil person, but her sin makes her "light" hide away. The sun is used as a descriptor of the goodness or pure nature of character." (Bogdan-Andrei, Gavrila. Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Scarlet Letter - Light and Darkness)

Describes how the light is a symbol for her Pureness. It explains how she is not seen as a bad person, but the fact that the light "hides" from her is a reminder of her sin. Just like how the scarlet letter is also a reminder for her sin.
