Vincent van Gogh is one of the world’s most famous painters, but when he was alive, he was not very famous at all. Since his death, he has become one of the most successful painters in history. People across the world have admired his unique style. He made around 2,100 artworks.

Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands, but travelled across Europe. He went to France, Belgium and England. When he was in London, he was inspired by all the art he saw in galleries. Van Gogh’s brother, Theo, worked in an art gallery and introduced him to many artworks.

When he was 27, he decided to become an artist. Up until then, he had been a teacher, a shop assistant and had dreams of working for the Church. All of these experiences inspired his art.

Van Gogh struggled with mental health problems. This meant that he sometimes felt very angry or sad and was not able to control his emotions. Sometimes, he would harm himself and have blackouts. Van Gogh used painting as a way to express his emotions and way to help with his illness.

Van Gogh’s did not get the help he needed. He felt alone and was not able to handle the pressure of his emotions. He died by suicide. He was only 37.

Van Gogh liked to paint the places he visited and also liked painting portraits. He painted portraits of many different people he met, but he really liked painting portraits of himself. He made over 30 self-portraits.

The Last Supper: Leonardo da Vinci’s greatest painting

The Last Supper is one of the most famous and iconic paintings in the world. Painted by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci during the late 15th century, it depicts the final meal shared by Jesus Christ and his disciples before his arrest and crucifixion.

The painting is a mural that measures approximately 15 by 29 feet and is located on the wall of the Dominican church Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. It is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance art and is known for its incredible attention to detail and the use of light and shadow to create a sense of depth and movement.

One notable aspect of the painting is the use of color. Leonardo uses a limited palette of warm tones, with the main colors being red, yellow, and brown. This gives the painting a sense of warmth and intimacy.

The expressions of the figures are also noteworthy. Each of the disciples is shown with a unique expression that conveys their individual reactions to Jesus' announcement that one of them will betray him. This adds a sense of realism to the painting and makes it easy for the viewer to imagine themselves as part of the scene.

In conclusion, The Last Supper is a painting that has stood the test of time and continues to be one of the most admired and studied works of art in the world. Its composition, use of color, and attention to detail make it a true masterpiece of Renaissance art.

Precious Ohioma.

Water Lilies is a series of approximately 250 oil paintings. Te paintings depict his flower garden at his home in Giverny and a smaller pond spanned by a Japanese footbridge.
The main focus of his artistic production during 1897 and his death in 1926.
In his first series, Monet painted the pond environment, with its plants, bridge and trees neatly divided by a fixed horizon. By the time he painted Water Lilies, which comes from his third group of these works. In this, the artist looked down, focusing solely on the surface of the pond, with its cluster of vegetation floating amid the reflection of sky and trees. Monet thus created the image of a horizontal surface on a vertical one.

Àlex Moreno

This painting it’s called Self portrait with Plucked-Out Eye, the author is Victor Brauner, he was born in 1903 and died in 1966.

This piece of art was painted during Victor Brauner’s second stay in Paris, between exactly 1930 and 1935.

It carries a symbolic place in the author’s life and it foretold the accident which maked him lose his left eye.

So this painting holds a very huge mix of emotions, and it can make you feel modest, and it can let you see what you have, and appreciate it.

A recurring symbol in his works, perhaps his obsession, is the enucleated eye. He often represented subjects whose eyes or a single eye were detached from their orbits.
In this painting the artist portrayed himself without his left eye, and in 1938, as an involuntary prophecy, due to a fight in a bar, it by a glass he left just his left eye. This painting shows us a tragic story, but a very artistic painting that envolves a lot of people.
The painting is Romanian and the author of it is an surrealist artist.
Brauner had full use of both of his eyes at the time, though he was preoccupied with eyeless portraits.
Six years later, he left his left eye, (like I said previously)

Lleó Roca

Caspar David Friedrich was one of the most important painters of German Romanticism. He was born in Greifswald (Germany), in the year 1774 and died in the year 1840.

In his paintings we can find the feelings of deep anguish to nature and the astonished and almost painful knowledge of the insignificance of man in the face of his greatness.

Some people believe that “The wanderer above the sea of fog” is about a self-portrait of Friedrich. The young figure standing in contemplation has the same red hair as the artist.
The figure stands in contemplation and self reflection, hypnotized by the haze of the sea fog as if it were a religious and spiritual experience. He wonders about the unforeseen future.

Though Friedrich painted this scene in his studio, he drew it at the place of inspiration, Elbsandsteingebirge, a mountain range between the state of Saxony and the Czech Republic.

He was always greatly inspired by German landscape and deeply moved of the beauty he found in his homeland. He depicts the mountains, the trees, and the heavy mist above the sea.

Oriol Castañé.

The Starry Night is a picture painted in 1889 by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890). It is considered one of the painter's most important paintings because of its unique and original style, which marked a turning point in post-impressionist art.
The painting is now in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

It was painted during his voluntary internment in the Saint Paul de Mausole psychiatric hospital outside Saint Remy (France). Van Gogh's Starry Night is related to a circumstance in his personal life.

The painting is divided into two sections: the celestial vault and the landscape. When Van Gogh looked out of the window, his earlobe was gone and he was quite plagued by hallucinations. When he looked out of the window, he was drawing the whole city.
When he looked at the cypress trees in the garden, they seemed to vibrate. When he looked at the night sky, the stars seemed to be alive.
With his strong brushstrokes, Van Gogh draws a landscape, the spiralling sky seems to really move on the canvas. The stars have their own halo, which the painter exaggerates to express more. In reality, the city is still, but he exaggerates the landscape a little more.

Bassma

The Swing is also known as THE HAPPY ACCIDENTS OF THE SWING. This painting was artistically painted by Jean-Honoré Fragonard in the 18th century in Wallace collection in London. The artwork portrays a stylish young woman on a Swing. Two sculptures are there which are putto and putti, a grinning young man lying low in the bush below and to the left, points towards her swelling dress with hat in hand where putto watches from above the young man and a smiling older man who is hidden nearly in the shadows on the right, move the swing with set of ropes as a small dog barks nearby whilst putti is beside him. The lady is wearing a shepherdess hat, as she throws her shoe with an outstretched left foot.
Apparently this workpiece was first given to Gabriel François Doyen but because he wasn't comfortable with it he passed it to Jean-Honoré Fragonard, it is examined to be one of the masterpiece of the Rococo era and it became Fragonard's best known work.
Mind you this masterpiece was an oil painting.

Justice

It is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci, the most famous portrait in history. It is a half-length portrait in which a woman appears watching. It was painted between 1503 and 1506. The technique used was blur.
The fame of this painting is not explained solely by the technique used or by its beauty, but by the mysteries that surround it, such as the enigmatic expression of the face, which has generated many comments that have tried to answer with various investigations. For example, some historical studies have made it possible to determine that the model in the painting could be a neighbor of Leonardo, and that the model could have been pregnant. And that is why it generates greater curiosity among admirers of the painting.
In addition, to the legend surrounding La Gioconda we must add the theft of 1911, the multiple reproductions that have been made, the riddles about the identity of the model or the secret of her smile, the multiple works of art who have been inspired by it; all of this has contributed to making La Gioconda the most famous painting in the world, which is visited by millions of people every year.

Yousra

"Pollice verso" is a Latin phrase that translates to "with a turned thumb" and refers to the practice of ancient Roman crowds turning their thumbs up or down to indicate whether a gladiator should live or die. The phrase is famously associated with the 1872 painting by French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme, also called "Pollice verso," which depicts a victorious gladiator looking to the crowd for the signal of life or death. The painting is considered an important work of the academic art movement and is known for its realistic portrayal of ancient Roman culture and its use of chiaroscuro lighting.

David Carrascal Arias

The birth of Venus is one of the most famous and appreciated work of art. It was painted by Sandro Botticelli between the year 1482 and 1485. This painting can be found at the "Uffizi Gallery". The technique used to paint this is the tempera on canvas.

The composition shows Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, arriving at the Island of Cyprus. She is being blown by the winds: Zephyr and Aura. Venus is standing on a giant scallop shell, she is covering herself with her long blonde hair and hands. Beside her is a young woman, the Hora of spring, holding a cloak decorated with spring flowers to cover the goddess nudity.

The body of Venus has unusual propositions: a long neck and an overlong left arm. She has a beautiful figure with delicate skin and soft-flowing curls. The way she's standing is based on classical statuary.

This painting was very controversial. Even though it has mythological references and meaning, it was seen as a problematic art for decades. Since the main character is portrayed nude, it was very different from the arts in the Middle Ages, and it goes against Christian Values.

Justie Anaman

The naked Maja is one of Francisco de Goya's most famous works. The painting is a commissioned work painted before 1800, in a period that would be between 1790 and 1800, the date of the first documented reference to this work.It was paired with La maja vestida, dated between 1802 and 1805, probably at the request of Manuel Godoy, since it is known that they formed part of a cabinet in his house.

We can highlight the particular luminosity that Goya gives to the body of the nude, a luminosity that contrasts with the rest of the environment, and next to this luminosity the typical expressiveness that Goya knows how to give to the eyes.

The Clothed Maja

This work formed part of Manuel Godoy's art collection. Following the Aranjuez uprising of 1808 and the abdication of King Charles IV that same year, the work was seized, along with other items, by order of Ferdinand VII. Between 1808 and 1813 it was stored, together with The Nude Maja, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and in 1813 it was confiscated by the Inquisition. It was kept at the Madrid academy from 1836 until 1901, when it entered the collection of the Prado Museum, being mentioned in the museum's catalogue for the first time in 1910.

The artist has made use of a greater degree of artistic freedom in this painting than in the much more academic treatment employed in The Nude Maja. Here, loose brushstrokes and thickly applied paint are used to recreate the maja's clothing. Goya deftly captures the folds in the white fabric covering her body and the shimmering cloth of her pink sash and pointed shoes. More time has been spent on rendering the flesh tones of the face and the dark curly hair.

“The intelligence and directness of their gaze is also remarkable, revealing the resolute, active personality of these women. In these paintings, Goya demonstrates how a woman's intelligence and attitude can prove to be at least as seductive as her naked form.”

Museo del Prado

Jacques-Louis David was a French painter who was born on the 30 of August 1748 in Paris and died on the 29 December 1825. During his life, he met some important people such as Robespierre and Napoleon Bonaparte, with whom had a close friendship.

He painted many works of Napoleon, including “The coronation of Napoleon”, and he gained so much confidence with Napoleon, that he was asked to accompany him to Egypt, but Jacques-Louis David refused. When Napoleon returned from Egypt as First Consul, he commissioned David to commemorate his crossing of the Alps.

“Napoleon Crossing the Alps” is one of the most famous paintings of Jaques-Louis David, and it represents Napoleon leading his army through the alps, defeating the Austrian army.

This painting has 3 known versions, which all were commissioned by Napoleon. The first one shows Napoleon on a white horse, wearing a blue uniform and a golden cape. Whereas the other two paintings show him wearing a blue uniform and a red cape, one on a white horse and the other in a brown one.

An interesting fact about this painting is that Napoleon crossed the Alps on a mule, but to make it more impressive, he asked David to paint him calmed, mounted on an enraged horse.

Pol Comes

Farms near auvers also called Thatched Cottages by Hill was painted in July 1890 beautifully by Vincent van Gogh when he lived in France, Auvers-sur-Oise. Auvers-sur-Oise is small town in the North of Paris where Vincent van Gogh lived the last few months of his life, after he left a madhouse in at Saint-Rémy in May 1890. Van Gogh wrote to his sister Wil as soon as arriving at Auvers:" In this spot there are roofs of mossy thatch which are excellent of which I'll surely do something." It is similar to Thatched Cottages and Houses but the painting seem to be uncompleted, a painting thought to have been carried out shortly after arrival at Auvers. The painting was made over by C. Frank Stoop to the Tate Collection in London in 1933, however it is presently on loan to The National Gallery. It was painted in the same month van Gogh passed on.
Consider this artwork was oil painting.

Francis Pomaah Kodom.

- It was created in 1875
- It is made with the Oil on canvas technique
- This painting belongs to the National Gallery of Art, in Washington D.C, United States.

This painting represents his wife and son in a meadow. This work gives a feeling of tranquility, companionship and happiness.

Those portrayed in this work are his wife Camille and his son Jean; he creates a great monumentality in the figure of Camille by focusing from below, taking advantage of a uneven terrain, which can be seen in the work. This work gives a feeling of companionship, tranquility and happiness.

In this work, the line is not completely defined but the masses of color that tell us the elements that are there.

The volume has a little more prominence, thanks to the shadow cast by the woman and the child. Also thanks to the shadow we can tell where the sun is coming from.

The perspective of this painting is thanks to the color. The work does not have a vanishing point, but the color of the landscape gives the space that the painting has.

As we have said before, the color is the aspect that stands out the most in this painting and it helps the painting to have volume. White, blue and green are the colors that stand out the most in this painting because the author wants to convey a landscape.

The light is also one of the most important aspects because, as we said about the volume, we know where the sun is positioned and casts a shadow on the child and the woman.

The visual texture sagon el quedre is not smooth like other paintings. If we look more closely at the painting, there are grains of paint in the brushstrokes made by the author.

The brushwork that the author has done is quite unique because he gives pieces of brushstrokes of each color to make the sky and splashes of paint to make the flowers on top of the grass. And visually it is understood that it is a landscape.

It is a portrait that he made in exchange for clothes, because Benet Soler was a tailor for him and other painters. The portrait can be found in the Hermitage, in Saint Petersburg.

This painting is made with oil on canvas. In the canvas, we can see the natural elegance through some refined details, for example the care of the mustache. Picasso, however, did not want to represent Soler in his real personality. Apart from some biographical details, the painting is veiled by the usual melancholy, which colors the canvas in brown and dark colors. It gives the impression that it is impossible for a moment of sunlight or natural light to ever penetrate the gloomy atmosphere in which the portrait is immersed.

Laia Soler
