"Another way of becoming a shareholder in a piece of music is by singing it. Another is by playing it with any instrument, acoustic, electric, digital. Another is by dancing to it in any way: with your feet, with your head, with your whole body. And another is by trying to own all of it, on recordings. Then you are a different kind of shareholder—a proprietary kind."

"But why do we build collections? Perhaps we want to turn a musician’s work into a living thing. We want to make it something to live around, rather than have it live around us. We want to corporealize it, give it a body and perhaps a soul. We want to have a relationship with it, as we would with a friend; or we want to codify it into a tradition or a belief. And at that point, when it is fully grasped and known, the work can be internalized for ever as an open question, a principle for living. Or it can be forgotten."

A few people seem to still value vinyl records, and while there is nothing wrong with this, it does show a new side to music, one that emphasizes a collectors standpoint on music. Although many people just prefer the sound of vinyl over CD or digital, a huge component of vinyl is it being the physical version of music. Ratliff definitely disagrees with this way of thinking, even though he can respect it. I have never thought about this way of thinking until Ratliff brought it up in chapter 10 of his book, and I can say that I do agree with his standpoint, but not as avidly as he does. I think having a physical representation of a specific album or song can help people be happy and express themselves musically while supporting artists. While some vinyl records or box sets of music may be overpriced, I can understand the perspective of people wanting to own some music that they love.
