The Mediterranean Sea is a semi-enclosed sea characterized by high salinities, temperatures and densities. The net evaporation exceeds the precipitation, driving an anti-estuarine circulation through the Strait of Gibraltar, contributing to very low nutrient concentrations. The Mediterranean Sea has an active overturning circulation, one shallow cell that communicates directly with the Atlantic Ocean, and two deep overturning cells, one in each of the two main basins. It is surrounded by populated areas and is thus sensitive to anthropogenic forcing. Several dramatic changes in the oceanographic and biogeochemical conditions have been observed during the past several decades, emphasizing the need to better monitor and understand the changing conditions and their drivers

In my PlantArea, drought affects the environment. It can result in lower water levels in reservoirs, lakes and ponds, as well as reduced streamflow in rivers. This decrease in available water can also lead to a reduction of some wetlands, groundwater depletion and even impact water quality (e.g. salt concentration can increase).Soil moisture is key for the breakdown of organic matter. Droughts lower the quality of soils, because there is less organic activity, more wind erosion, and soil insects or organisms perish.Water may become especially polluted during times of drought due to the lack of rain water to dilute industrial and agricultural chemicals. This toxic water can be harmful to plants and animals. However, as a drought worsens, these options may disappear.Farmers are unable to maintain their fields because of the drought conditions and the restrictions placed on water

Alexander von Humboldt is perhaps one of the most influential intellectuals in the field of geographical work, as well as other sciences.Cosmos is the great attempt of the Prussian sage to make a general work of synthesis of the knowledge of his time. But its value lies not only in its strictly scientific dimension, but also in its philosophical ideology. Rescuing some of its values, such as the universality of knowledge, respect between different cultures, human freedom, human rights and democracy, is undoubtedly one of the challenges we face today.

Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate.

Cretan Zelkova (Zelkova abelicea) is one of the most prominent Tertiary relict trees of the Mediterranean region, and is therefore of considerable ecological importance. Endemic to the Greek island of Crete this species is found in open mountain forests between 900 and 1,800m. Some key factors that made this specie go endangered are : The overgrazing and browsing by goats and sheep Livestock destroy seedlings and saplings hindering the species’ development to fruiting and they also cause soil erosion by trampling. Fires are also a major threat to the Zelkova trees, and the other vegetation of Crete in general. An increase in pruning of branches to make walking canes has also had an effect on this species, as has the use of Zelkova for firewood.
