If the cause of the meningitis is unknown, antiviral and antibiotic treatment will likely be used while the cause is determined. Treatment for chronic meningitis is based on the underlying cause. Antifungal medications treat fungal meningitis, and a combination of specific antibiotics can treat tuberculous meningitis. Noninfectious meningitis due to allergic reaction or autoimmune disease may be treated with corticosteroids. In some cases, no treatment may be required because the condition can resolve on its own. Cancer-related meningitis requires therapy for the specific cancer.Acute bacterial meningitis must be treated immediately with intravenous antibiotics and sometimes corticosteroids. Viral meningitis is usually left untreated and will resolve itself.

These drugs may help reduce some symptoms and help control some behavioural symptoms. Some examples are glatantamime, rivastigmine, and donepezil. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine. For moderate to severe Alzheimer’s a medication called namenda an N-methyl D-asparate antagonist is prescribed. The drugs main effect is to decrease symptoms which could allow some people to maintain certain Daily functions longer.
