Innovative pedagogy and assessment tools

This training course was the third module in the pedagogy training course that we received with our colleagues in the sixth pedagogy round, beginning from Jan 17th, 2023 to Feb 14th, 2023 with two different dear educators.

As we learned in the student-centered module, the differences between the student-centered approach and teacher-centered approach in teaching, now if we want to apply or make our class a student-centered learning class we need to know and apply or use different teaching methods to obtain or to achieve the benefits of that new method.

First of all, we have to know what is teaching method or what are different teaching methods that are applied in the world for teaching and where to apply each of them.

The teaching method includes all the different ways that the teacher or educator can use to deliver the knowledge he or she has to the learners and make the students have critical thinking in addition to being creative.

In this module, we received some of them by presenting them in a group presentation practically by ourselves besides the more detail we learned from teachers, this new information about the teaching method reflected that we have to use different methods of teaching, not just lectures as we have in our classes before. The methods that we took are the following:

Flipped classroom: A flipped classroom is a teaching method and form of blended learning that involves assigning texts to students to finish at home and having them work on real-world problems in class. The goal of a flipped classroom is to encourage student engagement and learning. This instructional style brings activities into the classroom, including ones that might have previously been regarded as homework. In a flipped classroom, students actively engage with subjects in the classroom while also watching online lectures, joining in online conversations, or conducting research at home under the supervision of a tutor.

Storytelling is a teaching strategy that encourages young students to approach difficulties and assignments in a playful manner and adopts an in-depth understanding of the subject at hand.

A technique for managing talks in medium- to large-sized groups is called a fishbowl, A circle with an inner and outer section separates the students. Students converse in the inner circle, sometimes known as the fishbowl, while those in the outer circle observe and take notes, we can have one empty chair for the outer circle students who want to participate in the conversation.

We can invite a subject-matter expert with relevant experience to the collaborative method, which will enable students to learn more from that individual.

Gamification as a teaching tool. The instructor must design his lecture such that students can have fun while learning as well.

We taught how to save a person in a medical emergency through simulation-based learning, which is most common among football players.

Guest presentation in this learning technique the learner invites a guest that is more knowledgeable about this lecture.

In skill-based learning, the educator is trying to use the skills that make the students’ skills promote and utilize their skills in learning.

Students are involved in the discussion of certain scenarios that approximate or are typically real-world examples while using a case-based method. This approach is learner-centered and features intense interaction between participants as they increase their knowledge and analyze the case as a group.

In the snowball learning strategy, the learner discusses one subject and involve learners by writing down their ideas on a piece of paper after that each student throws his paper to other students: the students will pick up other students’ answer and share it with the class in order to solve for example one existing problem.

And we had a drama teaching method from its name the lesson will be like a drama the students can take different roles.

In the student-centered module, we learned that there is diverse psychology of teaching each group of students to have unique learning skill in other words they can learn by differently from others, according to that, of course, we need different teaching methods to involve all the class as the reflection we have to be more mindful which method is relevant to each lesson also to our students based on their reflection and understanding, I think the storytelling method will be the good tool in the most situation because the learner will use all parts of the brain that make the information to remain a long time and will make them have different feelings because the story makes three different hormones to get out.

Assessment Methods/tools:

What do we mean by assessment?

The assessment encompasses all the tools and methods that the educator can use to assess students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes during the study period. The length of study, which helps students develop their knowledge, skills, and attitude, also helps educators to know how much of their effort is getting from learners.

Assessment starts with the determination of learning objectives and concludes with a determination of the degree.

Sometimes assessment starts before the start of the training to determine the learner's previous level of knowledge, for instance, the placement test for learning a foreign language. This test shows the learner's level of knowledge. This test helps learners save time and money by letting them start from where they need to. In some countries, there are some tests that assess the knowledge of the learners when they find that the students have already done some steps that place them at the level required for them.

We have three types of assessment:

Formative Assessment: This type of assessment is under the control of educators. The teacher decides when and how the different assessment styles will be assessed. As we learned on the topic of teaching methods, we have very different teaching methods. All this variety of methods requires different types of assessment according to specific teaching tools. Formative assessment includes quizzes, rubrics for presentations, etc.….. which helps students to learn new things.

Summative assessment: this assessment type is usually formal the time is determined by the college or department and its often a test on paper.

Peer and self-assessment: in this type of assessment the learners assess themselves or assess each other.

Why do we assess?

-To guide the learning process.

-To prove evidence, certificate or degrees, we get degrees in the evidence for assessment.

When we assess at the beginning or in the first step, we focus on knowledge to find out what the students learned afterward, skills when we get down to work, and finally attitudes.

The characteristics of assessment tools include these points; make clear the points from positive to negative to each student. Out of emotions, be the repetitive or continuous process, cover the individual needs, relevant to the subject, measure the clarity of knowledge and skills in order to present the strong and weak points to each student.

In my reflection, if we applied different methods of teaching that student-centered teaching requires, because of the existing variety of intelligence among the learners and according to the diverse subjects so we need different assessment styles, and I learned that constructing precise and clear rubrics help the educator and learner to develop their skills because the teacher has to make rubrics that help the students to know on what point will they assess according to that point they will prepare themselves to the assignments. In the teacher-centered teaching system, we only assess the knowledge usually by an exam, but in the student-centered approach, we assess knowledge, skill, and attitude, in another word we assess the competency to prepare the learners for the market or all life facility.
