Potential Research Problem

I am interested in studying the initiatives dedicated toward reaching out-of-school children of the world. To narrow my study, I would focus on the children of Sub-Saharan Africa and the global challenges faced by these marginalized children. With over 120 million children and adolescents currently out of primary and lower secondary school worldwide (globalpartnership.org) I would like to investigate this global issue, its progress and its future agenda for reaching such a wide population of our world’s youth.

Research Approach

For my study, I will use a qualitative research approach. I am still unsure of the methods I would use for my study. However, I think it would make sense to go with a narrative approach, oral history and life history – based off my findings. I would examine the lives of the out of school children through the research literature I have found, in order to create a narrative that is collected through my interpretation of the sub-Saharan African culture. (I am not sure how I can personally conduct my own data for this research topic and so I would need some help in this area if that is required.)

Data Collection and Data Analysis Methods

If my study is based on my own analysis of addressing the global issue of reaching the out-of-school children of sub-Saharan Africa, I would then analyze data that I have collected through the literature I have found. In many of the research articles I have found, studies using in-depth interviews of groups of children as well as family - these interviews were aimed at exploring personal, scholastic, social and socio-economic domains which relate to children’s non-attendance at school (Poreteus et. al, 2000). Surveys were also conducted and carried out throughout schools in the literature I have found as well as through document analysis. In examining the comparative analysis of the problem, Maya (2014) did a document analysis that focus on the out of school children and those children who have dropped out, specifically looking at children of Turkey, Japan and USA.
