In 1993, Sheila Watt attempted to run for an elected office position and work alongside with Makivik Corporation. They would administered funds from the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement. She lost the election but this experience made her work harder for the position and when she ran in 1995, she got the position as the secretary for Makivik Corporation. Also in 1995, she was elected to be the Canadian president of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC). She held this position for 7 years(2002). Later on that year, she ran for the International Chair of the ICC

This way, she represented Canada, Greenland, Alaska and Russia until 2006

She got the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, for her environmental and political activism, her significant impacts of climate change on the Inuit people

Sheila and her community had to deal with permafrost and ice caps, warmer temperatures, and unpredictable weather patterns

This affected their health and source to food

The arctic is melting and it’s affecting the Inuit and their culture. Beneath the melting ice holds oil and mineral wealth. The northern traditional life and home were at stake due to their melting inhabitant/community. During her time as she held one of the main positions at the ICC she lead the Northern indigenous people from four different countries into a campaign against the persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The organic pollutants have greatly poisoned the Arctic food chain and did a significant impact on the Inuit and their rights as individuals . The NGO’s and other supporters came to her aid and they were able to negotiate a treaty to ban the toxins. She fights for public opinions to be turned into public policies because she believes in equality and balance for us
