Ur was one of the first real cities in the world! Located in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), it had huge temples called ziggurats and was part of a civilization that invented writing (cuneiform). People farmed, traded, and built amazing buildings from mud bricks.

Ancient Egypt

These cities were capitals during different times in ancient Egypt. Memphis was the first major capital, while Thebes came later. Egypt is known for the pyramids, pharaohs, and the Nile River. People believed their rulers were gods!

Ancient India (Indus Valley Civilization)

This city had straight streets, big public baths, and even indoor plumbing! Mohenjo-Daro was one of the first examples of city planning. The people had a writing system we still haven’t figured out!

Ancient China

The capitals of Anyang & Luoyang were both capital of ancient China. Anyang was filled with bronze tools and oracle bones. Luoyang became a place of art, learning, and growing dynasties. Families honored their ancestors and believed in the "Mandate of Heaven."

Ancient Rome

Rome grew from a small village to a massive empire. It’s known for strong laws, big roads, gladiator fights, and aqueducts that brought water into the city. Roman ideas still shape government and architecture today.

Mayan Civilization

Tikal was deep in the jungle of Central America. It had tall stone temples, plazas, and ball courts. The Maya were amazing at math, astronomy, and making calendars. They believed in powerful gods and made sacrifices to please them.

Aztec Civilization

Inca Civilization

Heian was a peaceful city where Japan's royal family and nobles lived. People wore fancy robes, wrote poetry, and painted. This time is known for art and beauty, but it was also when the samurai class began to rise.

Mongol Empire
