It means that we as citizens in this digital world need to learn effective ways to be safe and responsible on the internet. We need to “Reflect. Spend time considering what types of networks you want to join. Research. Once you have a purpose for finding a network, it’s time to do a little research. Where are people with interests like yours connecting? Connect. Once you have figured out where to connect with others, it’s time to get started!” (page 140). It's always good to reflect, learn about networks, research, and connect with people who know how to be safe online. Being a citizen in this digital world means that we need to observe behavior and interaction. We need to “Observe. Pay careful attention to the norms of behavior and interaction in the community. Contribute. Networking means learning from others but also giving some of your experiences and expertise to others in the community as well” (page 141). Observing and paying attention to norms of acceptable behavior and interaction in communities. Talking about your experiences. Learning about expertise from others.

As teachers, we need to encourage students to talk about issues, injustices, and find solutions to them. “Identify injustices. Encourage students to brainstorm injustices they see around them. Connect. Use technological connections to find others who are passionate about the work. Research. Have students investigate ways they can contribute to the work that’s already being done by others. Take action. Action will look different depending on the work to be done” (pages 177-178). Students need a safe space to talk about what they’re going through and what they’re experiencing. The internet is a place where interactions happen. Good or bad interactions everyone learns about everything. “Lessons about cyberbullying, sexting, and internet addiction reinforce the notion that the internet is mainly a place for inherently negative or shallow, unimportant interactions” (page 137). Therefore, students need to be aware of these issues happening and prevent themselves. Not everyone uses the internet for good. Not everyone is politically correct. “Because digital conversations happen across physical and sometimes cultural boundaries, oftentimes the participants’ norms of offline conversation are not even the same. Unfortunately, these missteps can result in misunderstandings, hurt feelings, insults, and unproductive bickering” (page 141). Everyone has an opinion. They’re not educated on how to answer online. When it comes to political spaces people post whatever they think and comes to mind. They don’t think about the effects of what they’re saying for good or bad. “Even if our students aren’t seeking out daily news or actively reflecting on areas of injustice in the world, this generation is being fed a constant stream of information on current events, world news, politics, and social injustices through their TikTok feeds and Instagram accounts” (page 172). Students are being exposed to people’s opinions and misleading news on social media. Students need to reflect on positive examples of social media usage. As teachers, we need to model what is the right usage of social media. “Use those opportunities to encourage student voice, empower students as members of the community, model meaningful dialogue, and allow students to reflect upon the roles they play in our global society” (page 195). They need to learn to use the digital world for good reasons. They can express their opinions by being politically correct. They need to stand up for what they believe in.
