June does not accept the truth from the stories that her mother (Suyuan) tells her. She finds that her mother would tell the same story, but it never had the same ending. The ending would grow darker , cast long shadows into her life, and eventually into june's. June never acknowledged what her mother was trying to tell her until she was gone. June's future was clear as in where her family and friends had her headed and wanted her to go, but June didn't know where her future was headed or where she wanted to go. Throughout the book June's future it became more hazie because she started questioning everything. June's family and friends would question her about where she was headed, what her plans were, and what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. This made June question herself weather her plans were good enough, or if her future would get herself somewhere.

Lindo

Lindo accepts the truth that she was never going to be a perfect wife for Tyan-yu. She was forced into a marriage with a man that would not love her. Her future was clear because she knew what she wanted and strived for it. Linda did not want to be in a relationship with Tyan-yu and tries many different things such as telling them that her dream showed that bad things will come to their family if they stay together. Then she was to leave the family and that is what she wanted. Her mother told her she was lucky and she found out what that meant by herself. Throughout the book, Lindo works for what she wants

Waverly

Waverly accepts as truth that she can never accommodate both her and her mothers desires. She tries to meet in the middle. Waverly is unclear of her future because she hasn't decided on whether to follow under what her mom wants her to do or if she will pursue her own desires. Wavered doesn't accept that her mother was the one who made her a champion at chess, she believes that she did it on her own.

Lena

Lena accepts that there are terrors everywhere in the world, and that you will encounter them, but you must face them in the best way possible. The part of the future that is clear to Lena, is that things will get better. Her experiences with her mother, and the mother and daughter next door made it clear that she will face fear and terrors in her future, but she will get past them

Rose

Rose doesn't want to accept the truth. Even though she knows it is true or sees it coming she chooses to ignore it and just does not want to accept it. Towards the beginning of the book Rose's future is clear because of her marriage. However, things weren't going so well between her and her husband, Ted, and a divorce is in process, but Rose does not want to accept it. Later in the book Roses future

An-Mei

An-Mei accepts the truth that her mother was a burden to their family. Speaking her name was believed almost to be like a sin. The future is in a way unclear because it does not speak of the future as much. It mostly talks about the past and the present. It talks about how the daughter shows compassion for the mother. An-Mei's mother was never around because her family did not accept her mother so she was never around. It opens her eyes about family and forgiveness.

Ying-Ying

She accepts the fact that the moon lady is not a perfect god but a person who is just like human beings, they make mistakes, and are not always wise. Ying- ying is clear about her future because she finds herself after having the talk with the moon lady. She matures in herself and realizes that what she needs is not to wear this type of clothing, but she wanted to find herself as where she stood in life. Ying- ying does open up to new truths because she now understands that the moon lady was a fairy tale, it was a belief.

Suyuan Woo

Suyuan accepted the truth that she could not keep the truth from June forever. She had a plan to tell June about her daughters and previous life in China. She was clear about her future, but never got to carry out her plan. When she created the plan, she did open up to new changes, in that she finally gave into keeping her daughters a secret and decided to open up.
