Mission: We believe that all scholars have the right to learn to read and improve at reading in our schools and classrooms and that we are accountable for their success.

Implementation: We support our scholars in their literacy development by:

● Teachers explicitly teach foundational skills, create opportunities for practicing skills (and exposure to previous skills) and differentiate for individual student needs

○ Provide explicit instruction in phonological awareness, concepts of print, sounds of phonemes and blends, letter recognition, phonetic patterns, word structure, vocabulary and/or fluency.

● Every student has an opportunity to practice and demonstrate mastery of the objective skill

● Students know their goals and next steps

● Students have autonomy and choice and coaching in selecting texts for independent reading with a focus on enjoying reading

● Students are empowered to translanguage and make cross-linguistic connections across program languages

○ Students’ linguistic identities are supported because teachers help students make explicit connections between languages through transference and translanguaging.

We also believe that our educators must have the skill and training to be able to support scholars in goal setting, and in practicing fluency, awareness, and structure.

Students’ linguistic identities will be supported by educators who will help students make explicit connections between languages through transference and translanguaging.

Students are empowered to access to grade-level reading, writing, & speaking skills through repeated practice during class and/or with peers. Students experience joy & confidence through their experiences in class.
