This treaty ended the Mexican and American war leading to the Mexican Cession with America gaining $15 million worth of land from Mexico. This upset the Missouri Compromise, because their were now more slave states than free states making the nation unbalanced.

Free Soil Party 1848-1854

Election of Zachary Taylor 1848

Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852. The novel was about a family of slaves and how they were treated. This greatly affected how people in the U.S viewed the treatment of slaves and it was a significant contender to the beginning of the Civil War, mainly because it created more controversy over whether slaves were morally right or wrong.

Kansas Nebraska Act 1854

Election of Franklin Pierce 1850

Pierce wanted to enter his presidency easily and calm down the nation from their already aggressive sectionalism, but he did far from that. He tried to stay neutral and hear from both sides of parties however failed and mainly supported Democrats. With this he lost support from other parties such as the Whigs resulting in him to not be reelected for the next term.

Research says that this contributes to the Civil War because it shows peoples willingness to resort to violence. This even also shows sectionalism because people were so against each other that they had to resort to violence.

Election of James Buchanan 1856

Pres. James Buchanan was elected in a three way presidential election. He won against a democrat candidate and a "Know Nothing" candidate. Buchanan attempted to calm citizens by telling them to take no side in the argument for slavery, eventually his leadership failed which led to the Civil War.

Election of Abraham Lincoln 1860

This election was significant towards the civil war considering it showed heavy opinions for anti-slavery and pro-slavery supporters. Lincoln didn't get any votes from the south but still won leading the nation to a war.

Succession of South Carolina 1860

Crittenden Compromise 1860
