The Marine Corps War Memorial, also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial, is located in Arlington Ridge Park, Virginia right outside of Arlington National Cemetery. It is a 32-foot-high bronze statue sculpted by Felix W. de Weldon. The memorial depicts a famous photograph, taken by Joe Rosenthal, of six U.S. soldiers raising the American flag at Iwo Jima, signifying the end of U.S. involvement in the pacific during WWII on February 23, 1945. This statue is dedicated to Marines who died in wars. The American flag on the statue has flown every day since November 10, 1954. Previously it has been believed that the photo was staged; however, this is not completely true as this was simply the second flag to be raised at Iwo Jima to replace the first flag with a taller one.

On the pedestal below, every Marine Corps engagement is listed since the founding of the Marines. The view from the memorial includes a incredible outlook on the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol.

According to Dr. Kadam, when we drive around the memorial, it appears that the flag is actually being raised and at a certain point it almost looks like it is straight upward due to the change in point of view. In addition, there is not twice the amount of hands as people (an interesting thing to look for).

Who were the soldiers that the sculpture modeled the faces from?

What happens during the summers?

(I suggest to read the cnn article as I found it quite interesting)

Sources

http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/22/world/cnnphotos-iwo-jima/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Corps_War_Memorial (photo)

https://washington.org/DC-guide-to/marine-corps-war-memorial (for questions too)

The optical illusion was really cool. Compared to the other memorials, the entire thing wasn't that big (like no walking).. but the sculptures were REALLY detailed and I imagine very heavy - the figures themselves were gigantic.

I really liked the optical illusion. (The optical illusion was that when you walk around it looks like the flag is being lifted.
