The Calyx is the Royal Botanical Gardens Newest World Class Horticultural attraction built to celebrate its 200th birthday. It hosts elements of a living art gallery, with a theatrical experience that houses ever changing living botanical exhibitions. The Calyx is a place to inspire and capture imagination, an enchanting and magical experience where plants will take you on a journey of discovery. My favourite thing about the Calyx was the living wall feature, its the largest living wall in the southern hemisphere.

Welcome to the Prahran Hotel – an iconic Melbourne pub located in the heart of Prahran, serving thirsty locals and alike since the mid 1800’s.

At its core, the Prahran Hotel offers everything you’d expect from your local pub – a charming public bar to share a beer with your mates, a bistro, private dining, a beer garden and dedicated functions spaces.

While the soul of the re-invigorated Prahran Hotel remains very much the same, the addition of 17 over-sized concrete pipes stacked to the skyline is the defining feature that has drawn much attention from around the world. Designed to emulate a stack of beer kegs, the concrete pipes double as an external façade and an internal dining space, lined with leather banquette seating that can be reserved for groups of two, six or 10 people.

The new office, which is targeted for LEED Gold certification, will feature a host of sustainable elements. The office building itself is being converted from an existing warehouse, and is located near a bike path and an Expo Light Rail stop. Large expanses of glass and four skylights will introduce an abundance of natural light, while trickle vents will allow fresh air to circulate through the space and exit through exhaust vents on the opposite end of the building.

An indoor garden with native and adaptive plants will filter the office air and create a connection with nature. The garden will be watered and maintained by employees. In addition to the interior garden, a vegetable garden will be grown in the office’s “backyard,” which faces a residential development.

In creating a personal and private new residence within this historic and leafy Sydney suburb, we designed a series of ‘garden rooms’ that entwine the new home with the existing landscape. The design successfully negotiated strict local planning guidelines, while responding to the contemporary design aspirations of the clients. A material palette of timber, stone and concrete create a rich texture, in context with the surrounding natural and built environments. A historic sandstone perimeter wall was refurbished and rebuilt, while new sandstone was utilised in the house. Brick and timber from the previous house was reused in the new build, engraining the past into this next part of the site’s history. This beautiful, timeless home that grew out of the history of the site now encompasses and enriches the lives of the family within.
