Because the Native Americans lived near two plentiful rivers, their main source of meat was salmon. They collected wild onions and carrots in the grasslands. One of their favorites was camas, a starchy root related to lilies. They would use willow digging sticks and uproot the cama for eating it uncooked, for roasting, and for grinding into flour.
