Once upon a time there was in a hole underground the hobbit. Not in some there nasty dirty crude hole where from all directions tails of worms stick out and in a disgusting way smells of a mold, but also not in a dry sandy naked hole where there is nothing to sit down and there is nothing to eat. No, the hole was хоббичья, so — well-planned.
She began ideally round as a window, the door painted by green paint with the shining copper handle precisely in the middle. The door was opened inside, in the long corridor similar to the railway tunnel, but the tunnel without ashes and without smoke and too very well-planned: walls have been sheathed by panels there, a floor is laid out by tiles and covered with a carpet, along walls there were polished chairs, and hooks for hats and a coat as the hobbit loved guests have been beaten everywhere. The tunnel curled further and further and came quite deeply, but not into depth of Holm as he was called by inhabitants on many miles in a circle. On both parties of the tunnel there were doors — many round doors. The hobbit didn't recognize ascensions on ladders: bedrooms, bathrooms, cellars, storerooms (the whole heap of storerooms), wardrobe (the hobbit has allocated several rooms under storage of clothes), kitchens, dining rooms settled down in one floor and, moreover, in the same corridor. The best rooms were at the left, and only in them there were windows — deeply sitting round windows overlooking a garden and on the distant meadows which were going down to the river.

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle. The door opened on to a tube-shaped hall like a tunnel: a very comfortable tunnel without smoke, with panelled walls, and floors tiled and carpeted, provided with polished chairs, and lots and lots of pegs for hats and coats—the hobbit was fond of visitors. The tunnel wound on and on, going fairly but not quite straight into the side of the hill—The Hill, as all the people for many miles round called it—and many little round doors opened out of it, first on one side and then on another. No going upstairs for the hobbit: bedrooms, bathrooms, cellars, pantries (lots of these), wardrobes (he had whole rooms devoted to clothes), kitchens, dining-rooms, all were on the same floor, and indeed on the same passage. The best rooms were all on the left-hand side (going in), for these were the only ones to have windows, deep-set round windows looking over his garden, and meadows beyond, sloping down to the river.
