East Germany had many laws that restricted the freedom and opportunities of the East German citizens. To begin with, East Germany East Germany had a command economy law, similar to the economic system in the Soviet Union and other Comecon member states — in contrast to the market economies or mixed economies of capitalist states. Due to this economic law the people in East Germany were not able to thrive like those from West Germany and many citizens were poor lacking opportunity.

East Germans were subjected to far more stringent restrictions. The East German constitution of 1949 granted citizens a theoretical right to leave the country, though it was hardly respected in practice. Not until 1972 were younger East Germans permitted to travel to the West, though few did so until the mid-1980s.

In reality and in general terms it wasn't however, there are a few positive impacts that impacted the daily lives of individuals.

To begin with due to the fact that it was extremely hard to escape East Germany you could stay close to family and friends and battle through issues together. Furthermore, another positive impact it had on the daily lives of people was the fact that due to the walls of East Germany it actually protected them from the outside world. On the eve of the wall's 27th anniversary, the official Communist Party newspaper published a lengthy article repeating long-standing allegations that the 13-foot-high barrier had blocked a planned attack from West Germany actually.

There were many things in East Germany that caused problems in the daily lives of individuals. First of all, there was no freedom of movement, which means that people couldn’t leave East Germany until 1972, but the fact that it took so long to be legal caused discontent on people. Another issue was that East Germany’s economy was very bad. There were many poor people and the few people who were economically stable were mainly composed of the rulers.

Furthermore, the governmental power of East Germany suffered a lot because when the war ended they didn't have a strong and stable economy this led to people suffering from poverty and famine for example. Lastly, the government also had major interventions in the fact that they told all wall officers to shot on sight if anyone tried to escape therefore, everyone in East Germany had to suffer this and limited their lives and opportunities.

Very few people in East Germany as a result of government intervention and the only people who would have would have been high ranking officials of East Germany. Furthermore, due to the government intervention it also indirectly benefited everyone in West Germany because due to the strict rules on the wall, West Germany stayed relatively peaceful from those from East Germany. There also would have been a large influx of poverty if East Germans would have been able to cross the wall easily.
