After advancing, students focus on research under the supervision of a faculty mentor for the next 3-4 years. Some programs may also require teaching during this time. To graduate, PhD candidate write a doctoral dissertation (thesis), which students must defend before a panel of faculty members.

Completing a PhD can take an average of 5-6 years.
