Wonder: What is your wonder ritual in your classroom? If you don't have a ritual can you implement that welcomes "wonder" into your classroom? by Jessica Gamble

Everyone should and can create a wonder ritual with students that they work with. This applies to Specials Teacher and Title I teachers that teach Success.

I really try to make the kids feel like they are in the book. The kids really hate when the chapter ends and I close the book.

I have always enjoyed reading this way and so do my children and students.

The students know their jobs and they do them daily. Classroom jobs last for the month, so they get to know how to do them pretty well before it's time to switch. The wonderment of having a job is getting paid. They haven't gotten their 1st "paycheck" yet, so they are excited to spend their money in the class auction.

I create wonder during my reading as well with very dramatic reading. I don't necessarily feel that wonder can be at only one time. There is wonder possibility in everything we teach. I try to create it whenever the kids get excited about something. I plan on definitely doing this during the writing. I have loads of great stories to tell!

The wonder barometer in my classroom really hits the top during our chapter book read aloud. I'm currently reading James and the Giant Peach to my kids, and they are loving it. I talk about it in the hallway after enrichment, to get the kids excited for the next chapter I'm about to read. I can see that they are really getting into it, and they groan when the chapter is over because they want to know what's going to happen next.

I try to create wonder by placing a quotation on a large sheet of paper and asking the students to write down their thoughts about it 1st thing in the a.m. At first I got a lot of, "This doesn't make any sense." or "I don't know what this means." Lately they have been trying harder to paraphrase what the person is saying in their own words.

A lot of what I do with science inquiry and the STEM design cycle has wonder built into it. I'm always stressing creative problem solving, especially when we are doing projects. A great deal of this lends itself to a constructivist philosophy, to which I subscribe. Constructivists believe that we create our own learning styles and meanings, which is based on a human's natural inclination towards curiosity.

For our class we are reading The Outsiders. I have been playing 50s music as we come back in from specials to set the mood. We often recap what happened in the last chapter - "Last time we read Pony and Darry got into an argument and Darry hit Pony but I can't find my page and I don't remember what happened..." or "________ wasn't here we have to fill them in on what is going on. Who can help me?" We use The Outsiders for our Hochman activities and I use Ponyboy as an example when we are writing about special places. items, people, etc. "I wonder who Pony would write about as his special person. I bet he'd pick Soda at the beginning of the book but now that he has spent so much time with Johnny it might have changed." The kids all said that the description of Two-Bit fits me best.
