I forget what time it is" (131).
The fact that Pony admits to always losing track of time speaks to his aloof nature. He is proud to be the youngest one there, but if he thought about it one more time he may have thought of the possible ages of the Socs. He isn’t thinking about the problems this could cause if the police showed up or if the Socs didn’t follow the rules. While this can be seen as direct characterization because the author is directly describing Darry, it can also be seen as indirect characterization. This can be seen as indirect characterization because a lot of Greasers, such as Ponyboy, value their hair a lot because it’s the “greasers’ trademark.” However, Darry always keeps his hair short. Earlier in the story, Ponyboy mentions that if it weren’t for the fact that he lives on the Westside, Darry would be a Soc. Darry probably keeps his hair short because he doesn’t like being associated with greasers, and if it weren’t for his family he wouldn’t want to be a greaser.
