This can  be seen as indirect characterization because a lot of Greasers, such as Ponyboy, value their hair a lot because it’s the “greasers’ trademark.” However, Darry always keeps his hair short. Earlier in the story, Ponyboy mentions that if it weren’t for the fact that he lives on the Westside, Darry would be a Soc.
