No student should ever feel this way! It reminded me of myself when I was in the 2nd grade. This student in this poem was not happy, was not confident and hates everything about school. They don’t believe in themselves and doesn’t have anyone else to believe in them. It may not be because they don’t, it just may be because his/her family has a lot going on. They feel defeated, unwelcomed, unloved, etc. They need love but don’t understand how to get it or show it. They hide, their quiet so they don’t have to worry about being called in class because they know they don’t know the correct answer. They want and need love and attention and is secretly asking for it.

He has been learning English for about a year. 

He lives with both his parents. His dad works multiple jobs to be able to feed him and his 5 siblings. He lives in an urban community and is the youngest child. He tends to not get as much attention as his siblings. His mother stays home to take care of them but is unable to help him with his work. She does not understand it. She got pregnant at a young age and never finished school. His dad works so much that all he does is sleep. His siblings are always with their friends and don’t really have time for him. His mom wants to help him, but every time she attempts to, she gets sick, due to being pregnant with her 7 child. He is an unhappy child at school, but happiest when he is in the field pretending to be something or someone rather than himself.

These are important to understand how Kofi feels, point out his strengths and weaknesses. This will help understand the needs of Kofi rather its language, academically or socially. He may have behavioral issues depending on how he’s doing at school but this can be fixed before it even starts by getting him the help he needs immediately.

It would be important to understand what’s important to them when it comes to Kofi’s education. It would also be important to know how much time is spent at home doing homework and how do they best support Kofi? Also, how I can support Kofi as well? I would use labels throughout the class not only for Kofi and other students but also for his parents that do not read or speak English. They will be able to see what we are doing in the class by labels and also see how welcoming our class is. I would also invite parents into class whenever is possible, I believe it can help them with learning English and also support their son. They can be a parent helper. I would also invite older siblings to help in class, so if parents are not able to. His siblings can see what we’re doing in class and be able to help Kofi at home. I would also ask parents about Kofi’s strengths; I would like his parents to know that they are the most important in this process. That they have to agree with everything before proceeding with any sort of testing, intervention, etc.

The last consideration should be focused on his strengths and also things he likes, by doing this the assessment team can better help him succeed.

There also needs to be an Educational Interpreter for the needs of the parents.  The Speech Pathologist, Psychologist, and the School Nurse also need to be there. Kofi has SLD (Specific Learning Disability). Kofi is still young; he is 9 and as we know language is a big part of why he is struggling in school. Literacy is where he struggles the most due to language. 

1.     By the end of the year student will expand academic vocabulary 
This will help the student feel more confident in class with all subjects, it will also help with his social skills and help him make friends. He will be confident enough to speak to his peers. This can also help him with expressing his wants and needs. 
2.     By the end of the year student will Read Grade level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate and expression at 80 words per minute, with 80% accuracy. 
3.     By the end of the year student will Make positive statement about the qualities and accomplishments of self.
4.     By the end of the year student will Make positive self-affirmations.
5.     By mid-year student will Seeks assistance to solve problems for self or peers when appropriate. 
These last 3 goals are about Social Skills/SEL. Which I believe is the most important for this student. He will never be on grade level if he is not confident, or have self-love. He needs to be happy about himself before being academically ready for change.

These two strategies would be effective because the teacher is aware of the different cultures and language barriers. It also gives the student the ability to answer questions when wanted or when they feel as they need to. It’s a confident boost when a student answers a question correctly on their own. Confidence boosting is the most important aspect when it comes to Kofi.

They will all be helping with Kofi’s progress and all need to be on the same page when working with him. They will have annual IEP meetings but also check in monthly for progress. They will see what needs to be changed and/or what’s working.

This educational program will improve the educational success of the students because their will be multiple people on his team and wanting him to succeed. He will have a confidence boost with everyone working with him, he will feel loved and valued. Which will help when doing his work. This can help academically and socially. He will want to learn after seeing the progress he is making. With that being said, he will start doing more work at home independently and start showing his parents the work he is doing. He will be proud of it and want to keep going and keep getting praised for his hard work, that will eventually become natural for him.

I am so happy to know that I have been implementing what’s needed for ELL learners and this class just justified how my hard work pays off. This class has also helped me recognize my full potential and how strong ELL teachers need to be able to support students. I am proud to say, that I will have my ELAD endorsement to be able to support students.  I have also been able to discuss a lot more with the ELL teacher at my school and understand the strategies she uses even more.  

I didn’t encounter struggle with the assignments per say. The struggle I encountered was with the due dates, sometimes I would confuse them with my other classes and miss assignments. I realized I had too much going on, but that was something that I couldn’t change.  I realized my son who is Autistic has a lot to do with me messing up dates and not completing assignments. At times I would try and do assignments with him awake and it did not work, he would either try and throw my computer, sit on my lap and try and type aggressively or get upset because he didn’t have my full attention and he would hit me to get it. What I started doing was completing work while he was sleep. There would be nights I would stay up until 3am-4am to complete work. I would be up so late because my son wakes up so many times through the night that it would take longer to complete. It helped me get through the assignments and feel good about turning them in. I also was going through fertility treatment throughout this class, which caused a lot of stress. I believe going through treatments and my son had a lot to do with my struggle in this course and not completing assignments. I didn’t stop the fertility treatments but I changed the way I looked at it, I was a lot more positive and used affirmations to make me feel better throughout this process. I also took 1 weekend where I went out of town, it was my first time getting somewhat of a break in 4 years. I used that weekend to reflect on how I was doing in school and also was able to peacefully go out to eat and enjoy the beach. 

I met success my first two weeks of this class. It was such an eye opener. Like I stated before I was doing a lot of the things, we read about but it confirmed a lot for me and where I would like to be in the future when it comes to my career. I believe my coworkers would benefit from what I learned, including administration. They tend to believe language is not a problem for a lot of students but any student that is ELL needs language support and I wish they would understand that. 

I made so many connections prior to learning. One specifically is that all ELL students need strong ELL support. Also, that without the proper help, students will feel incapable. My school has showed me this. Only having on ELL teacher for a population of 70% of EL students is not enough support. 

What impacted me the most is that CLDE students don’t get enough support. Also, that they can be perceived as needed to be in Special Education. Even though it can help, it there was a strong ELL teacher, or enough of them I should say. SLDE would get a lot more support and they would feel more successful in the class. 

You helped me the most when commenting on my work, explaining to me what was right helped me be positive about what I was doing, even with a low grade, I still felt successful. To help me more I think it would have been easier for me to be able to email through the blackboard portal. For some reason remind doesn’t work for me and hasn’t since I started teaching. Other than that you have helped me grow in so many different ways and I am so thankful.
