This is the first stage of stress. Within this stage adrenaline increases, along with noradrenaline, and cortisol. Many parts of the body speed up reactions, while others slow down in this stage. When experiencing alarm reaction common effects are headache, fever, fatigue, sore muscles, shortness of breath, diarrhea, upset stomach, loss of appetite, and drowsiness.

During the second stage of stress, the body is working to balance and defend itself. The symptoms of alarm reaction fade away. It is within this stage that psychosomatic disorders appear. For example, a weakened immune system is a bodily response that takes place in this stage.

Selye stated, "To be totally without stress is to be dead." He believed that stress was something unavoidable, whether good or bad. He observed that the body begins its reaction to stress through the autonomic nervous system. All forms of stress result in the same reactions: increased blood pressure, heart rate, perspiration, respiration, and muscle tension.
