After taking the School Counselor Competency Assessment, I don't feel that there are any mindsets of a school counselor that I disagree with, and there aren't any behaviors of a school counselor that I won't be able to perform. However, the planning and assessment category of competencies will be the most difficult for me and is an area where I will need lots of practice. School Counseling services should be available and benefit all students, and all students can learn and succeed when given the opportunity (ASCA, 2019). My strengths will be when I provide students with individual help. Providing an entire school with a counseling program that aligns with the school's values is overwhelming. While the planning and assessment category seems the most daunting, I also look forward to performing these job functions the most. Collecting and analyzing data to ensure that all students benefit from my school counseling program sounds extremely rewarding and something I would be good at. Section B-PA 5 refers to assessing and reporting program results to the school community (ASCA, 2019), and this section will be an area of weakness and will be an area I need to practice. I enjoy gathering and analyzing data, but presenting it to the school community will make me nervous. Another section that will be a weakness for me is section B-PE 2, which refers to identifying gaps in achievement, attendance, and discipline (ASCA, 2019). This will be a weakness because it's a broad area, and there will be so much data it will be challenging to identify the gaps, but I look forward to learning and practicing this section. I look forward to creating goals for the students and the school that will encourage the success of all students (ASCA, 2019).
