These theories were proposed in 1922, yet are still relevant as a way of disproving the Big Crunch. The graphs assume that there was a time when all matter was condensed together, representing the big bang, although Hawking didn’t necessarily believe in the big bang.  They represent how strong the gravitational pull is between two galaxies and if it’s strong enough to slow down the expansion of the universe.
