This unit is important because it allows young children to investigate how many things around us have changed over the years. They will understand that many things have evolved and technology has expanded. Also, they will learn that their parents and even people from long ago, before they themselves were even born, lived life differently than we do today. They will learn about different cultures and forms of life. For example, they will learn about groups of people from the Colonial times who had to hunt and gather food to eat, cooked over fires, and milked animals for food production.

Students will be learning and comparing a variety of meaningful, everyday necessities from long ago and today such as food preparation, clothing, toys, technology, and chores.

Overarching question: What do we know about life long ago?

Inquiry question: How is life long ago different than life today?

Supporting questions:
How have homes changed over the years

How has food production changed over the years?

What kind of chores do children do today?

Long ago and today are in themselves two different diverse cultures. Kindergarten students will learn about culture in years before and culture today. They will be looking at different clothing and hairstyles through photographs of people that lived a long, long time ago and also familiar faces they know today. They have one activity in this unit that teaches them about food production in America long ago when stoves and ovens didn't exist. They will get to relate that to their families now and how we have microwaves, ovens, and grocery stores.

Some examples of cultural diversity from long ago and today that will depicted:

Food production:
Long ago: Families harvested their own vegetables, chopped and gathered their own wood to cook, fed and milked animals, and churned their own butter.
Today: Families can go to the grocery store and have stoves and ovens.

Chores:
Long ago: children swept, fed animals, milked animals, cut and bundled hay, and harvested food.
Today: Children help do their beds, pick up their toys, and help do the dishes.
