Janie's freedom alters often throughout the novel; her freedom is closely related to her love. Her leaving everything she knows to search for how to live her way is similar to Thoreau's decision to live in the woods. Janie finds that she feels free when she loves and when she is loved. Her way of "truly living" is different than Thoreau's, but her goal is similar. She always desires love and a good marriage. With a good marriage she would not be limited by her husbands voice nor her lack of love. When Janie marries Tea Cake she is finally loved; she works freely without complaining as she had with Joe and Logan. Even after Tea Cake dies, she feels free with the feeling of their love.
