Dipping into the Ink

Had way more fun than I thought I would. Found the tjanting tool tricky to use at first, with more ink than wanted running through--as in the cat in the basket drawings--but then sort of got a better feel for it. With the sticks, things took off on their own!! --Louise

I had hard time getting the tool to work, so I mostly used bamboo and twigs, which I’ve never used before and found so much joy with it, thanks! The last two photos I took some old watercolor scraps and put my fave bunnies on top of them and am pretty happy with how they came out! Thanks so much for all the fun education!!!!

Drawn with tigs and ink, noticed the edges, used tracing paper, coffeepaper, made several repetitions and first admired the result...

Thank you for the new tool ideas! Drawing is new for me. I mostly do sculpture aka the small examples in the photo. Very fun and freeing to use the tjanting tool

It took me two days before I got the hang of the Tjanting tool. I had lots of "ink blobs" and went through a bottle of ink. I've used twigs, brushes, and various other tools so I decided to use those for fine detail on some of the drawings.

On television last week there was a newly born elephant at a Zoo and I enjoyed watching the videos. I used various light colors in the background & noticed it was difficult to see what I had drawn without making it a little darker.

I had so many blobs on one of these so I used it to my advantage by filling in the black teapot & the elephant's trunk. Then, I drew my Chinese Shar-pei, Gunnar behind an elephant and being held in my husband's hand when he was a puppy. On the top, far right corner, I drew his "back end" because he has a cute, sideways tail; but it's difficult to see.

For all the backgrounds I used the "Acacia" tree that grows in Africa along with tea plantations. One has a river that the elephants are walking through.

Mom elephant with baby & teapot ...then one with crows. I added pink cheeks to the elephants, gold eyes, more wrinkles to all the elephants along with more textured lines in the crows. Then, I added a lighter grayish color to all (diluting the black ink) and put gold acrylic on the beaks of each crow.

The top drawing is new. The baby elephant is taking a bubble bath, so I added texture to the wading pool along with light and dark blue gouache. I also added diluted black ink to both elephants and gave them pink cheeks. I used Titan Buff gouache with a bit of pink to all the rabbits & included a hill for the rabbits to sit on. Then I added light green to the tree in the bottom drawing & gave each of the elephants gold eyes.

For the top Shar-pei, I added a bit of Titan Buff & darkened the elephant, crow and puppy Shar-pei with diluted black ink. I added a golden dog collar to the top Shar-pei and golden eyes for the bottom one - including a golden beak for the crow. I also darkened the upper 'back end' of my Shar-pei's body with a darker blue gouache.

For the bottom drawing, I added more wrinkles to the elephants, more texture to the flying bird along with additional blue and a gold beak I put a light green in the Acacia trees in the background and darkened the blue water the two elephants were walking through.

Michele...THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS LOVELY CLASS.

Unfortunately, I drew most of my drawings to the edges of each page & had to cut some of the elephant's feet off along with a few of the back end body parts. No big deal though because they still looked okay. These three have Dorland's wax on them - but not buffed yet. I waited one week (maybe a few days longer) before I added the wax to each of them. This was so much FUN!!!
