Hi everyone! My name is Neilea (ney-lay-uh) Galvan. I'm currently in my second year here at Stan State. I live in southern California but I used to live in the central valley up until I was eight years old. As of now, I'm actually undeclared so I'm not too sure what I want to major in. But a major I'm looking into right now is Criminal Justice so that's a possibility in what I might go towards. Some of my favorite hobbies include shopping, walking my dog, and practicing my makeup. One thing about me is that I enjoy spending time with myself. I used to be so embarrassed to be seen doing things by myself because of my anxiety but lately this past year I've learned to realize that doing things by myself is not embarrassing. It was just my overthinking self thinking that it was humiliating. So I love how I was able to get past that mindset. One of my favorite foods at the moment is açaí bowls. I actually work at an açaí place so I also enjoy making them when I do work.

What I think of when I think of sustainability I think of being able to reuse some of our resources or just things that are we can recycle so certain things won't go to complete waste. I think it could allow us to protect and maintain the environment and be able to reuse things so they won't possibly cause any harm to the environment. This is my guess as to what it might mean since I'm not too sure. One way I think I practice sustainability is by recycling plastic bottles rather than just throwing them away since plastic does take a while to get rid of and can harm sea creatures.

The topic I choose to research is deforestation that occurs mainly in the tropics such as Brazil and this topic falls under the environmental pillar of sustainability. This topic involves animals, plants, and people who live nearby. A majority of deforestation has occurred in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. This topic has changed because it has affected many of the wildlife that lives in the tropics. This topic is important to me because it ruins many of the species habitats and especially the ones that might be endangered. This research is important to me because it upsets me that most of these trees are being cut down to grow, for example, palm trees which are being grown to create foods for us. Although this might seem like a good thing it is not because there are so many species that lose their habitats and contributes to climate change and much more. I hope to learn more about the major effects of deforestation.

Rhetorical Analysis and Information Literacy

The article that I choose to analyze is called

"A Year After George Floyd Killing, Fewer Americans Support Black Lives Matter Movement, Poll Finds," by Palash Ghosh. The purpose of this article is to bring awareness of the unexpected change that has occurred towards the support of the Black Lives Movement since it happened. Typically after a movement, we expect more support to happen towards that specific movement but surprisingly in this case we see a drastic change. A rhetorical device that is used is Logos. In the article, there were multiple statistics more specifically percentages they used throughout to provide evidence of how much the support of the Black Lives Matter Movement has decreased. "Just under half of U.S. adults, 48%, currently hold favorable views of the Black Lives Matter movement, down from 61% last May, the poll found" This illustrates logos because the author was able to provide credible information from polls and how much exact support has been reduced since the movement started. Throughout the article, there were many other stats as well that compared the specific support from the movement that was based on race and party affiliation. What was stated was how there was larger support from Democrats favoring the Black Lives Matter Movement than Republicans who tend to support less. Logos effectively fits in this article because it helps the author to be trustworthy and it strengths the argument of the topic.

From the IL Framework, this article falls under the category of continuing conversation because although the movement started last year it continues to be extremely important as it has been dedicated to fighting police brutality and racism against black people. It is interesting to see how much support from the social movement has lessened since it was one of those movements that received much attention nationwide. Perhaps in the following years, the support for the movement increases.

The genre I wrote about is Eulogy. A Eulogy is like a speech given to the family or friends of the one who passed away.

Hello everyone, before I get started, I want to thank you all for coming in and gathering together to say our final goodbye to our beloved Karen Zandarski. Since growing up with Karen as one of her best friends it's truly been a privilege to have known her all these years as she has become my inspiration. As we all know one of Karen's passions was teaching. She was always willing to volunteer to help elementary tutor students while in high school. Karen strived for her goals and was willing to make them come true. Karen would spend hours at home on her computer from the morning to help tutor students through skype to spending hours creating assignments her students could enjoy. If I could describe Karen in three words to someone who didn't get the chance to meet her, I would tell her as a kindhearted, diligent, and most courageous person. I will never forget the spontaneous trips we would go together to distract us from our problems. Karen's personality always lit up any room and made everyone feel comfortable, which is one of the things I admired about her the most because not anyone can do that. She has brought out the best of me as long as I've known her, and I'm sure she has done the same to you all as well. I will forever be grateful she was brought into my life. We will never forget the amazing aura she brought. We will forever treasure all the moments we spent with her and continue to hold her very close to our hearts. We love you.
