The Vocation of Artists According to JP II’s Letter to Artists

The relationship of God and the artist is not accidental. In fact, it was stated in the letter that the creator, which is God, creates out of nothing while the craftsman, which is man, creates form and meaning from something that exists already. Thus, from the start of the Letter, he wanted to clarify that he wanted to show the very essence of both religious experience and artistic creativity and not show that it is dictated merely by historical accident or practical need. In this case, their special vocation on earth is to create beauty and it should be a way of connecting to God as they are given the special ability to be more sensitive to it. Moreover, they have the power to create what is good but it does not mean that their morality and meaningfulness is also good because it has something to do with spiritual growth. Even though not all men can be an artist, all men have a unique vocation and each person has the will to dominate here on earth. We are also given a gift by God the power to create our own lives and a special spark of wisdom/ God given talent so therefore, we should cherish it and put it into good use. Artists express themselves in the image and likeness of God and also have the capability to reveal his knowledge through their artworks. This is why they should keep in mind the morality they put in their work. It was concluded in the Letter that a part of their vocation is to bear a fruit because beauty, must not be wasted, must be for humanity as a whole, and it must be for the service of our neighbors.
Enjoyable Beauty

When Adler talks about enjoyable beauty, it also refers to a “subjective“ beauty, wherein the beauty is identified with the enjoyable. Adler says that beauty is perceived by intellect, but our perception is not perfect and that is why we must practice looking at art. He also says that “the beautiful, is that which pleases us upon being seen”, where being seen is understanding something within the beauty. In the presence of beauty, we become speechless and it pleases us exceptionally. In enjoyable beauty, we consider factors such as pleasure, satisfaction, desires, needs and wants. This is because everything that pleases us is not considered as beautiful, rather it satisfies us. Pleasure is one of the things human beings desire, but this must be totally disregarded when we call objects beautiful. When we look for pleasure in beautiful objects, we then have a desire to possess it and completely disregard the fact that it is beautiful. According to Immanuel Kant, we may be quite content simply to contemplate or behold beautiful objects. The word “beautiful” is a superlative degree of a quality, this carries over to nature where beautiful is all around. It is seen in landscapes, seascapes, trees, flowers, or animals. We must see beauty with the mind and not the eyes alone, we are pleased when we contemplate the beautiful with our minds alone. Pleasure in this case, must be a disinterested pleasure, where we are pleased with just observing, looking, and appreciating beauty. Adler speaks about how beauty belongs to both the spheres of desire and truth or knowledge. He states that goodness is the value appropriate to the sphere of desire, and truth is the value appropriate to the sphere of knowledge. Beauty is both a value that is appropriate to the same sphere in which we find truth, and a value that is appropriate to the same sphere in which we find goodness. Whoever has poor taste and only looks for pleasure from objects will only be able to experience enjoyable beauty, through what they believe would give them pleasure and satisfaction upon their possession of the beautiful.
Admirable Beauty

We can call an object beautiful when we are speaking about the object itself and not about ourselves or about the object in relation to us. An object is considered beautiful if the object itself is being looked at based on its properties. However, it should not be based on our personal taste, or emotional reaction to it. It is just as much an expression of taste as enjoyment is but it may be mediated compared to the other factor that is immediate. According to Aristotle, “To be beautiful, a living creature, and every whole made up parts, must not only present a certain order in its arrangement of parts, but also be a certain definite magnitude. Beauty is a matter of size and order..”. Also, according to Aquinas, ““a beautiful object is something that has unity, proportion and clarity”. Thus, it can be implied that there are principles in beauty because there are almost the same standards according to Aquinas and Aristotle. When someone admires something, it is only an expression of taste, in terms of admiring it for its intrinsic excellence or perfection. Therefore, regardless of purpose, anything that is man-made is either well made or poorly made. In addition, art from nature is well formed and not well made. Which means that art from nature has a beautiful form originally and is not made from a skilful way. Objects are beautiful because they have certain properties that make them admirable, and while it is seen as objectively beautiful, it must be subjectively beautiful as well because the beauty of an object is itself universally. We see the object as it is and admire it for its beauty exclusively. All people have their own judgment of what is admirably beautiful, but there is a certain measure of objective truth in this as well. (Adler, 1984)
