The listener can obviously feel any emotion portrayed by the song like happiness, anger, sadness or whatever. A way they can tell is by the tone of the singer's voice, like Ratliff said, "It's the most human part of the music, the carrier of emotion".I love the fact that he explains thoroughly the differences between the formalist and expressionists. I did not even know there was such a debate in classical music over those two different perspectives, in which Formalists believe that music has nothing to do with "the work of emotions" and how expressionists think otherwise, music is all about emotions.
