Introduction to the World

I was born on May 20, 2005 in Mills-Peninsula Medical Center. My parents named my Daniel because there isn't a Daniel in the family and they liked the name. My siblings were also born in this hospital. I don't remember much about my birth but it was a special day for my parents. I still go to this hospital when I'm feeling ill.

School

The first day of kindergarten and elementary school was a good memory since I met new people that I still see today. I remember it was strange that my mom left me at school and that I wasn't with my parents at school. I loved the community there in the school, everyone was close with eachother. There were students and staff from different countries. The teachers, staff, and principal were so nice and amazing. There were so many fun events like the walk-a-thon, where we had to walk a lot of laps to get tally marks and the class with the most tally marks won. I would also help my parents translate documents from school and I helped them out a lot since they didn't understand.

Linguistic Capital is where communication and social skills are happening through different languages. When my parents didn't understand a school document or application I would help them and translate what it would say. This capital relates to this event because I would help translate for my parents.

My First Communion

Doing my first communion was special to me because I was receiving the body of Christ. People can't receive the body of Christ without doing their first communion. I am a Christian Catholic and I go to church every Sunday. I remember my parents made a party after and I saw all my friends and family. I was happy that my parents made me a party where I could see family and friends.

First Soccer Game I went to

My dad took my brother and I to our first soccer game. The game was in San Jose at PayPal Park. I remember not believing that I was actually seeing the players that I would watch on television all the time. I love playing soccer with my friends and watching it because it makes me happy.

In the article Soccer in Mind: A Thinking Fan's Guide to the Global Game, it talks about how soccer is a universal entertainment. This source includes ideas of sociology, psychology, and across the social sciences of the sport.

People have feelings for the sport. The fans spectating the games or even the players have feelings. The source states, "Feeling both tormented and compelled by soccer, whether from the stands, from the field, from the sideline, or from the couch, involves the human mind in all its complexity" (Andrew M.). This quote is significant because many people including me enjoy the sport worldwide. Soccer has been and will be a big part of my life. I have the happy feeling of watching and playing soccer.

The sport soccer offers many different types of feelings. There is a variability of things soccer could offer,

"offering physical, interpersonal, communal, and intellectual engagements that shape many days and, however subtly, many lives" (Andrew M.). This quote is important to me because soccer offers physical engagement to play with friends which makes me happy.

Seeing a lot of my family in Mexico for the first time

This was my first time going to Mexico. The best part was seeing a lot of my family for the first time. The worst part was leaving. A challenging part was the weather because it was so hot there. It was my first time out of the country and my first time in an airplane. Seeing a lot of my family was important to me because I wanted to know where I come from. It was my first time seeing my grandparents in person. Seeing and meeting my grandparents will always be important to me because they care about me a lot. I will always remember this moment.

Entering/Graduating High School for future education

This event was important because I entered a different environment where I learned what I liked and didn’t like (education majors). I learned that I didn't enjoy math. Classes were higher level compared to middle school. I also graduated high school which some people don’t accomplish. Also had completed an accomplishment to enter college and continue school. This was significant to me because I finished a section of school, to continue onto the next path (college).

Entering College of San Mateo and improving my future

Entering College of San Mateo was important because I can continue my education to get more and better opportunities in the world. Also I am a first-generation college student, so I’m the first person in my family to go to attend college. This is significant to me because I want to transfer to a 4 year school.

Using Resources around College campus

This is important because it will make my future a bit easier and having knowledge to know what to expect. I use promise counselors to ask for clarification. I also ask students for their experiences. Promise counselors help me with my classes and answer all my questions. They support everyone including me. When I was signing up for classes they helped me out so much, I appreciated their help.

Yosso, it talks about how navigational capital is managing resources in institutions. Navigational Capital is where skills of managing resources through organizations for example colleges. This type of capital relates to my post because I know how to manage and get support from my promise counselor to answer questions I have.

Time Management / Making a Schedule

I made it through the end of College 1 by making sure to pay attention in class/the professor. Also communicating with the teacher about assignments or letting them know if I was going to be absent. What I learned about myself through the process of getting through the semester was that managing time can be challenging. If I can’t make it to class because of an appointment or if I am feeling ill/sick, I need to work on what I will do. Some self-knowledge I will take with me from this experience will be to plan about work I will miss if I am going to be absent or if I’m sick. Sometimes being behind is challenging especially if someone has different classes. One piece of advice I would give is to make a plan if you are behind.

"ah-ha" Moment

My perspective on becoming a researcher has changed. When I was trying to find sources for the final project about first-generation college students' mental health, it was challenging to find articles that were good and on point. Articles would have some good stuff in them but not good enough which really changed my perspective on researching.

My Academic Goals

My academic goal right now is to transfer to a 4 year school. I decided to want to transfer to a 4 year school because I want to get a bachelor's degree in business. From the beggining of the semester nothing has really changed. I have taken some general education classes to be able to transfer. My plan is to finish all the classes required to transfer. In my first semester in college what I learned was that college has a lot of support, for example the writing and math center. My first semester of college has been different than how I imagined because I didn't expect the last weeks before finals week to be busy.
