Before we read a passage as a group I asked the following questions: What is this passage about? How is it organized? What words stand out to you? While we read aloud I would ask about a particular paragraph and how it had an impact on the rest of passage.

During our Australia project this week, students were required to work together in pairs or groups of three to do research on the history, lifestyle, culture, and government of Australia. As they looked for this information, they were all required to write two facts on each topic. They then had to share the information and why they selected that information for each section. Their peer group then had to recall information learned in the previous week, to acknowledge how that information was related was relevant to each topic. This not only allowed other students to learn more about each topic, but also required the students to hold one another accountable for the information, rather than allowing students to use random facts that were irrelevant to the content we had discussed.

During our lesson on Ocean Conservation, students were provide the opportunity to work in collaborative groups. During the I DO, the lesson purpose and goal(s) are establish. In the We Do phrase students are placed in collaborative groups to complete an interactive activity along with the teacher. The collaborative groups are assigned roles (presenter, leader, timekeeper, recorder). When we read informational text, students were asked think-pair-share with their peers in collaborative groups to determine the central idea. The presenter of the group is asked to report out to the teacher and the class. In the You Do phrase students apply the skills and knowledge they are taught in their collaborative groups to complete the task.

I used collaborative learning during an article discussion. Students are in the habit of annotating and reading the article on their own. Their next step was to discuss text connections with their group prior to whole class discussion & checks for understanding.

I used guided instruction during our collaborative group work. I would insert myself into different groups to make sure my students were focused and discussing the material in a productive manner. This also helps me to know whether or not my students understand the lesson. It lets me know, if I need go over some of the material again with the class.
