Scenario: You’re getting ready to teach a lesson to your group of middle school math students. You wat to incorporate literature into the assignment.

You have 28 students. Five have IEP’s, two have 504's. The majority of the class has been identified as gifted students. One student’s IEP requires all words to be read aloud to him.

How are you going to differentiate the needs of these learners?

We use Google Classroom so it would be easy to find short passages that can be put as an assignment, and then the students who would benefit from the read-aloud could have the computer read it to them.

I may have one of my gifted students read for the student that needs everything to be read aloud, if they both feel comfortable with the idea.

I think the most obvious choice is to group the students and allow them to partner read or to use reading pens, as needed. Using passages that are able to adjust lexile level is also a great tool!

I would have students follow the "reading protocol" that I have created for this specific instance. First, the students will read (or try their best to practice reading skills) then I will read aloud to the class. During my read aloud, I will pause to ask guiding questions and allow students to ask questions. I have started the implementation of this protocol this year, and I have already witnessed some amazing results in my SS class. My wife, the ELA teacher on my team has said that she notices a major increase in students' comfortability in reading passages.

Use sketch notes share with elbow partner/ use visuals

Use powerpoint to voice over the passage for the students who need a read aloud.

Use a text to speech for the read aloud. Group students in small groups. Allow students to work through problems.

I would create a video of myself reading aloud. This would allow the student to go back and listen again as needed when doing the math work.

I would use a program that uses an immersive reader for the student that requires read aloud. Using adaptive Lexile reader for different students and have students do partner discussions.
