The theme of the story is about the consequences of greed. and how it corrupts people. Throughout the book, the boy gambles for enough money for his mother, even though they are away from poverty but waste their money on unecessary items. From the setting of the story, the currency that was mentioned was pounds, which is equal to more US dollars. From the perseverance of this detail, this contributes more to the theme of greed.

In the story, the boy's eyes indicate the mood and current theme of each event. In one of the moments, his eyes are like fire. In other moments, his eyes are cold, usually when he feels sorrow. Also, The rocking horse was used to clarify the theme of the story. It resembled the boy's desire for wealth, and the harder he rode the horse, his luck purifies and intensifies. The horse had no name, which justifies that the boy isn't completely grateful of his luck.

Symbolism

The author expressed symbolism throughout the story by images and key concepts. The mood throughout the story changes based upon the boy's eyes, being described like fire but like coldness afterwards. The family was described as "poor" to make the reader feel a sense of pathos towards them, even though they aren't poor but misuses money.

Irony

Dramatic Irony was present throughout the story, especially at the end. We knew that the boy was going to die but the mother didn't know. In fact, the uncle adressed the boy as "son" even though it makes no sense. The boy's death in fact resembles dramatic Irony, due to the fact that he raises money for his mom to raise him, but soon afterwards he dies, meaning the money lost it's main purpose.
