         <description><![CDATA[<div>the 20<sup>th</sup> and last child of sharecroppers Lou Ella and James Townsend. She grew up in poverty, and at age six Hamer joined her family picking cotton. By age 12, she left school to work.<br>She was passionate, had a strong voice for civil rights and voting rights. A leader who never let her guard down. She talked with white politicians, was on talk shows, and when too court with her head held high. Got arrested because she wanted change to happen but not only for herself, but for her people as well.</div>]]></description>
