If you told me 10 years ago that I'd eventually be a first responder taking classes to become an EMT I'd probably look at you sideways. Life happened and things changed where I was offered a different job and within my first week I assisted on a medical call. Since then I've met co-workers who've inspired me to learn what to do in emergency situations. I originally took the EMR class as a personal interest, but since then it's become something I'm truly inspired by. Just knowing what to do and not be a bystander is the most important thing I've learned.

The most important thing I have learned so far is that rapid response is one of the most important aspects of care in the prehospital setting. We need to be able to quickly recognize the problem, treat what we are able, and then get the patient on the way to a hospital that continue their care. Every second counts during an emergency.

It is important to get as much information as you can and for it to be accurate when collecting it to do at handoff to the ED. This information can make a difference of care or services that they need to continue at the hospital. It is important to give information over the radio on the way to the hospital also so they can prep for the patient

I think that the most valuable and impactful things we have learned so far have been CPR and learning the signs of strokes. In both cases, the timeline matters a lot and understanding what needs to be done immediately to help save a life and prevent lifelong damage is essential and valuable. The fact that this course has given us the confidence to use these skills is enough that even if we don't continue in the field, we could save someone in the future; and even if we don't save anyone, we still have the ability to which is a tangible impact.

Having proper knowledge of proper first aid and CPR is huge for me. Having standard first aid supplies should be considered essential in every household. I feel the exact same about teaching first-aid and CPR in high school. It's what we don't have enough common people knowing PROPER CPR. Back in high school we had first-aid kits for sale for our fundraiser. We were all pretty skeptical about being able to make money from the sale. That year was actually the best fundraiser year we had! It's amazing how many households or cars have a standard first-aid kit in them.

I feel the most important information I have learned thus far and used at work is CPR and making sure you a, because if you are not re preforming it correctly, because if you are not there is no point in continuing to do it. Also knowing what first aid equipment you can have on you if there is an emergency, and you stop to help knowing what you can and can't do is big so learning about that was great knowledge to have.
