What is White Privilege, Really?

The source What is White Privilege, Really? connects to the story Their Eyes Were Watching God because it talks about how people that are not white do not have as easy of a time doing things as white people. The source explains that minorities may have the same opportunities as white people but they have a harder time being successful at it. This relates to Their Eyes Were Watching God because in the story, Janie the main character, goes through life struggling because she is a black woman even though she works hard. She lives in a completely different world than white people and men and they don't respect her through out the whole story. Today the white privilege is not as big of a deal because most businesses and schools realized this and made it more equal for everyone to be successful in America.

"What Kind of Asian Are You?"

The slam poem What Kind of Asian Are You? is about how most people stereotype all asians into the same group when in reality there are many different types and cultures through out Asia. Alex Dang talks about how he was stereotype into a smart math kid or the ninja and how he was neither of those things but he had to act like it to be accepted by others. He said it was hard to grow up in America because everyone else though they were better than him and didn't respect him or his culture but he couldn't stop it. This relates to Their Eyes Were Watching God because the same thing happens to Janie except its even worse because she's a black woman living in the south. Every one she meets thinks that she is unable to take care of herself and work hard but all along the way she proves them wrong and lives a very successful life.

What is Whiteness?

The New York Times article What is Whiteness talks about how there are only two types of white people racist or people that do nothing to fight against racism. They say that not all white people are in the same race and that now a days whiteness is anything besides being black. They mention how before world war two white people were different in how they identified as either northern European or Irish or Italian but those aren't different races those are just countries that their ancestors are from. This connects to Their Eyes Were Watching God because in the story there are nice white people like the Washburn family that let Janie and her grandma lived with for a while. Then there are the racist people like Ms. Turner even though she was only half white, she believed she was better than other darker black people. She though that Janie should not be with Teacake because he wasn't good enough for her just because he was dark.

The Real Racism Exposed by Hurricane Katrina

World News Group author Marvin Olasky stated in his article The Real Racism Exposed by Hurricane Katrina that the fake news media was responsible for multiple deaths because of the fake stories they put out about people shooting and raping after the hurricane that delayed relief efforts. He said they would stay stuff like black people were raping people and murdering anyone they saw and were even eating people. Only 4 murders occurred and that was a usual amount in a week said the mayor. This shows how racism can cause problems in society after major events happen. This relates to Their Eyes Were Watching God because there is a big hurricane while Janie and Teacake were down in the everglades and everything went to madness. After the hurricane there was racism because the town payed for all the dead white people to have coffins but all the black people were just buried in a ditch.

Boston. Racism. Image. Reality.

Writers at the Boston Globe published a series of stories about how Boston is racist and has made little progress in the past 40 years. They went around the city and studied multiple different areas of the city and saw that black people were not equal to white people. The city is made up of about 75% white people and a mix of the rest and most of the rest are in poverty. No black people are in the Vault, a group of business leaders in Massachusetts and there are very few people in the prestigious Boston schools like Harvard or MIT. This relates to Their Eyes Were Watching God because in the south black people were not accepted into white cities and if they did chose to live there they did not have the same rights and were not liked. This is why Janie and Jody move to an all black town called Eatonville and they had to advance on their own.
