1. While watching video #1 and #2., screenshot one of your favorite moments of students' activities for Video #1 & #2. 2. Then observe very carefully, and explain what kinds of learning are happening with children. What is the student role? What is the teacher's role and what is the teachers' intention/reasoning for the particular activity? Are there any similarity and differences between screen shots? If so, write about it, 3. Also write response to at least two of your classmates' posts.

I liked this specific screenshot because it showed that all the children were paying attention and wanted to participate in morning meeting. 6/7 children raised their hands almost immediately and it shows that they feel safe to share their answer to the whole class. This is an example of a responsive classroom that focuses on the children. This specific example shows active engagement, routines, think aloud, greeting, verbal redirection, and many other aspects of a responsive classroom. The intention of the teacher is to create a classroom community and to form a solid foundation for everything else the day has in store. This classroom is responsive because it is student centered. and allows for the kids to take on leadership roles by guiding the discussion.

I found this specific screenshot to be important because it shows the teacher guiding the discussion and all the children observing what she is pointing to and any directions or questions she is asking. This is also an example of a responsive classroom because the teacher is tailoring instruction to learning needs of her students, using smooth transitions, using positive language, and letting the children share. Although the teachers role is to guide the discussion, the students are really the ones engaging in the conversation and answering the questions which forms what the big idea is going to be for that specific lesson. This is similar to the video one screenshot I took because they both show a responsive classroom where the children are taking on the roles of having the conversations and sharing but the teacher is there to keep things running smoothly. Both videos show the goal of the teacher being to create a community within the classroom by. creating a safe space for learning and allowing the children to be heard and seen.

My favorite moment of video #1 was when the students were greeting one another at morning meeting. The students were centering in to class and beginning their day with a friendly start. The student's role in this screenshot was to focus on starting class with their classmates and give them a proper greeting to show engagement. The teacher's reasoning was that morning meeting was the most important part of the day because it allows students to come into their day ready to collaborate and learn. The teacher's role is to be a facilitator and allow the students to converse and greet one another. They were able to express their voices and show care and attention to their fellow classmates!

My favorite moment of video #2 was the signaling. In this example the student role was to show the teacher their understanding while the teacher was teaching. This helped the teacher to understand how each student was feeling about the lesson. The teacher's role was to be an assessor and figure out how to proceed based on student feelings. This is also the reasoning, to see how each student is feeling about the lesson. The differences between the two screen shots is that while in video 1 the students are responding to one another, the students in the part of video 2 i selected, are responding to the teacher. It is similar because the teacher has made it so the students have this role in the classroom where they get to openly respond.

The students were sharing things with one another and listening carefully and asking questions. You could tell the children were very interested in what each of their classmates had to say. This allowed the children to see how their classmates they really care about them and their thoughts. The teacher's role was to give the children to space to share with one another. Her intention was to let them express themselves, as well as show their classmates that they care through listening and asking questions.

My favorite moment of video #2 was when the teacher was guiding the students in the think aloud. She was asking questions and allowing the children to share their thoughts and what they know. She was creating a responsive classroom by actively engaging the children and giving them the opportunity to share their thoughts. The student's role was to engage with the teacher's questions and the activity and share their ideas. The teacher's role was to guide the students in their thinking, helping them to learn. She gave them to space to think and respond to what she was asking, but guiding them in their ideas. Her intention is to actively engage the students in learning. The similarities between the screenshots of video #1 and video #2 were that both were of the teachers allowing the children to share their thoughts and ideas with the class, and the children were actively engaged in both. The differences were that in video #1, the discussion was guided by the students. In video #2, the students were involved in the activity, but the teacher guided the discussion more.

The teacher's role was to give the children a space to share freely in a student led discussion. The teacher's intention in having the students share at morning meeting was to create a classroom community, to help students feel safe, respected, cared about, and happy, all while ensuring that they are ready for the day and ready to learn.

I liked how the students were engaged, but the few students who did not want to participate were not forced to. I think that it is important to not force students to do things that they may not be comfortable with, like dancing. The teacher's role was to act a model for the motions, and to lead the transition. Her intention was to allow students to take a brain break through physical activity during transition time, and to ensure that students were ready to learn. In both moments that I have chosen, the teachers were trying to make sure that students were ready to learn. Both teachers were also trying to help relieve student stress during a transition.

My favorite moment from Video #1 was when the student talked about checking off each of their classmates names as they shared. I liked how this kept the student engaged and actively participating in the activity at hand. This also provides the students the opportunity to make sure each of their peers are able to say something and not just one or two students dominating the conversation. I think it is important to teach students ways to take turns because some students may want to talk a lot and share so much and others maybe not as much but this provides them an equal opportunity. The students roles are to listen to their peers and ask questions to learn more about them. The teachers role during this activity is to model how they want students to listen to others. They also have the role of providing the class with the board for each student to be able to share and to facilitate by guiding students if needed to make sure students are being active listeners.

My favorite moment from video #2 was the emphasis that routines are key. I think having routines in the classroom is very beneficial to students because there is no surprises or activities that they are not prepared for. Routines also help students have a sense of comfort. Knowing what is happening and what is going to happen next can ease a students mind and prepare them for the day. Having routines also make for smoother transitions to the next activity. Smoother transitions is a result of students being able to regulate their behavior because they know what is expected of them. The students role is to follow the routines by knowing their responsibilities and action steps. The teachers responsibilities are to follow the routines each day and also to model the action steps that they want to students to take so the students are reminded of what they are expected to do without being told. Similarities between Video #1 and #2 are that the activity of using a white board and students being an active listener is a routine that is followed in that class. The students know what is expected of them because they are provided the opportunity so often. The students role and the teachers role is also similar in both in that the students know their responsibilities and follow them and the teachers guide the conversation and model how they want students to act. The difference between my two screen shots are that the white board is a specific activity that the one classroom follows and in the second video it just explains the concept of routines in general.

My favorite moment of Video #1 was when the teacher had the class do a handshake greeting during Morning Meeting. I chose this moment because this creates a caring environment in the classroom. Being greeted in the morning is very important. One kind of learning taking place is the children are building soft skills for their future. Knowing how to do a proper handshake and greeting is a wonderful skill to have. Another form of learning taking place is team building because every student will greet someone and be greeted. The student's role in this situation is to sit in a circle and shake the hand of the classmate next to them. The teacher's role is to observe this skill building and determine what the mood of the class is that day. The teachers intention is to start off the school day with everyone feeling welcomed. This is similar to my choice of moment for the second video because they are both forms of greetings. However, it is different from my second choice because the teacher is involved in the second video greeting but in this video they are not.

The kinds of learning taking place were modeling the teacher and each other, practicing a song together, and learning how to greet kindly. The student's role in this activity was to sing along to the flashlight song and then whoever was in charge of the light had to pick a classmate to pass it on to when the song ended. The teacher's role was to begin the activity and model what was to happen and then watch her students perform what she showed them. The teacher's intention in this was to have a fun activity to begin her morning meeting and practice modeling among her class. A similarity between this video and the first video is that both of these events took place during morning meeting.

My favorite part of video 2 was the flashlight greeting. I really enjoyed this greeting because the teacher was first able to model the expectations as to how the greeting should go, and then the students were able to follow. I thought that this was a fun way to start the day because all of the students were involved. I also like this activity for the beginning of the day because the students get to choose other students to pass the flashlight to. By doing this, each student has the chance to be seen as a valued member of the classroom community. The students role was to sing along, and pass along a flashlight to somebody who has not gotten it yet. The teacher's role was to first model what the activity looked like and then observe the students. This activity was similar to the one I picked for video 2 because both activities focused on involving all students to form a sense of belongingness in a community.

I think that makes the students comfortable with one another to share. The students are then able to discuss how they are feeling, easier. They feel cared about. The students role is to listen and interact with one another during morning meeting. The teacher's role is to make sure her students feel seen, safe, and cared about. I think having a morning meeting are important to the day. It allows for the students to settle in and feel apart of something after leaving home in the morning. The students explained in the video how morning meeting make them feel calm and happy, it gets them ready to learn for the day.

My favorite part of video #2 was the emphasis on how important routines are. Students rely on routines during their day, this way the students always know what is expected of them. It gives them a sense of comfort in the classroom because they know what is going to happen next. It give the students a peace of mind coming to school with expectations. The transitions during the day are easier when the students know what is to come next and how they must act. The students role is to listen and react how they are supposed to do during their transitions throughout the day. The role of the teacher is to give the students a comfort in their day with unexpected surprises.

My favorite part from video #1 was being able to see all the students share something about themselves or what they did over the weekend with one another. Each child is given a turn to share something with the rest of the class and once they are done sharing they put a check mark next to their name representing that they had their turn. The other students get involved by asking questions and sharing their own ideas and opinions. The kind of learning that is taking place while children are sharing with one another is the practice of speaking, listening and thinking. They learn how to negotiate and build relationships with one another. The students role is to share something with the morning meeting and answer any questions the other students have. Next, the teacher's role is to create a learning environment where children are able to feel welcomed by one another and feel safe. They want the students to convene with one another before starting the school day. Sharing during the morning meeting helps the students practice their social skills and look forward to the rest of the day. The difference between my two screen shots is that the one I posted has all the students names on it with check boxes next to them in order to show who has shared already and the other one shows a whiteboard with every students names on it as well as a list of topic ideas that students can share with the class if they are stuck.

I used morning meeting as one of my favorite moments of activities #2. Children with strong social and emotional skills find it easier to establish good relationships and this has a positive impact on their well being. The teacher's role is to set the tone for respectful learning, provide a sense of trust, allow all students to feel important, encourage respectful learning, and support all aspects of learning-academics, emotional, and social. The students role in morning meetings is to learn how to use their emotions to build connections with their teachers and classmates. The components of the morning meetings are greeting, sharing, activity and daily announcements. Not only do educators get to know their students on a deeper level, but students will likely share their thoughts, feelings, problems, needs and hopes for the future.

I used daily schedules as one of my favorite moments in video #1. The teacher was informing her students of the learning environment expectations a loud by giving a run down of the daily events. Children who are familiar with classroom schedules and routines are more likely to be engaged, attentive, and learn new knowledge. It is the students role to cultivate daily habits. Routines give students a sense of security and stability. The teachers role is to help his or her students come to an understanding of everyday events and procedures and learn what is expected of them, it also helps them make their environment more predictable. Children can learn to cope with transitions throughout the day. Transition times can help children move from activity to another. It encourages them develop self-regulation skills. Actively teaching children to sequence of activities through self-management to work individually or with classmates to create a sense of community in the classroom. This screenshot is similar to my last one about group discussions because it correlates to the morning meetings and its components because daily schedule can be discussed during a morning meeting.

The students are able to be comfortable with all of their classmates and also develop good social interaction skills this way. In the video, the students were able to let each other and their teacher know how they were doing that day, whether it was good or bad. One form of learning that is taking place is social skills. Students that learn how to develop good interaction skills at a young age are often the ones that establish great relationships in life and are more outgoing and willing to take many risks. The role of the student is to be an active participant, and the role of the teacher is to be an observer in the situation. The teacher will be able to observe each child's interaction and can then determine how class will go for the day.

I feel as though this is important not only for the teacher to keep him or herself in check throughout the day, but to also help the students keep themselves in check as well. By creating a daily schedule, students and the teacher know what to expect and know that there are expectations that will be set and needed to be met throughout the day as well. The role of the teacher is to help the students know what is expected of them, while the role of the student is to be good listeners and adapt to the schedule in place.

The student's role is just to share anything that they would like to spark a conversation. The teacher's role is to facilitate the conversation. Not only does it get everyone involved, but it also gets them moving a little bit before they sit. The role of the student is to sing along as the flashlights get passed around, say good morning to everyone, and pass the flashlight off to another person. The teacher's role is to model the expectations and greeting. I believe the reasoning behind this is so that each person is greeted in the morning. It is important that each student is greeted and not only a few. I would not want my student's to feel lef tout because I said good morning to one student but not them.

One of my favorite moments from this first video was the greeting portion of morning meeting. Pictured is a third grade classroom doing the ball greeting, but there are many other examples. The children are learning about interpersonal communication because they are encouraged to maintain eye contact and greet each other while going around the circle. The children are also learning the importance of listening because they have to look out for their name in order to catch the ball after a classmate says good morning to them.

The student role in this activity is to make sure that no classmate is forgotten about, to maintain eye contact with the students having a conversation with them, and to stay focused and engaged on the activity. The children also have to pick which greeting that they want to do each day. The teacher’s role is to pay attention to the students to see how they are feeling on any particular day. Maybe if a student is doing the greeting more quietly than normal they could be tired, and that could be something to take note of for the rest of morning meeting.

The intention behind this activity is to make sure the students feel seen and heard before any learning takes place. The greeting also creates a community and starts the transition from home to school on a happy, welcoming note.

This is similar to the daily schedule I liked from video #2 because it gives children predictability. Every morning meeting starts off with a greeting, and this greeting will help the children transition from home to school because it is something done every single day at a similar time.

For the second video, one of my favorite moments was the schedule. The schedule gives children predictability, which is essential for their wellbeing at school. Through this, the children are learning about predictability and starting to understand how to mentally prepare for the day ahead for the day. The children might even be practicing their reading skills because they will be able to recognize specific words like “recess,” “math,” etc.

The student’s role is to listen to the teacher while going over the schedule for the day, and maybe even asking any questions they have so they can better prepare.

The teacher’s role is to keep everything predictable. Daily routines should be similar, if not the same, every single day to give students the safety they need when at school. Teacher’s should also explain anything on the schedule that is out of the ordinary for the day.

As stated before, the intention for having a daily schedule is predictability.

This screenshot is similar to the greeting from the first video that I liked because it reminds students that school is a safe and predictable place. The schedule gives children a safety to fall back on if they ever feel confused about what is going to happen next, while the greeting is a welcome that sets the tone for the school day, which is often one of safety. The daily schedule is different because it is not something the students necessarily have much control over, where the greeting is something that the students can choose which one to do each day.

My favorite part of this morning meeting video is the picture shown above that portrays student involvement in the classroom. It is refreshing to see these students get excited about setting themselves up for a successful school day and getting to know their peers a little bit better. Here, the students are participating in a learning environment that involves each of them and values what they each have to offer. Because they feel so comfortable, they are able to freely raise their hands to add to the conversation, as shown here, as well as ask each other questions, greet each other with ease, and set the stage for the rest of the day and all they will accomplish together. The student role in this instance is to listen to and ponder certain questions that arise in class that the teacher or other students ask and come up with thoughtful answers. This part of morning meeting is powerful and allows for the teacher to model ways to speak with others in order to create an environment that the students feel safe, understood, respected, and comfortable in.

I really enjoyed this Responsive Classroom video and the topics it touched on. In this screenshot, I included a scene from the flashlight greeting activity, a strategy the teacher put into place to allow for a more enjoyable way to greet peers in the morning. One thing that stood out to me though, was a smaller detail of this activity. The detail was how the students, as they handed the flashlight to one of their peers, said good morning to each other using their first name. This simple addition to the activity, including everyone's names in the greetings, is more inviting and makes this activity more personal and meaningful. If I were a part of that class, I just know that I would feel included and valued in the classroom. On top of this, I appreciated the fact that the teacher modeled and practiced what is expected of students as they greet everyone during this activity. Not only does this modeling affect the way the students complete this activity, but it also allows for the teacher to connect to some of their own students as they involve themselves in the activity, instead of sitting back and watching. Here, the students are responsible for greeting each other and being kind and inviting, while the teacher's job is to observe, be involved in the activity, and monitor how the students handle the activity so to be sure that they are getting the most out of it. This screenshot is similar to the previous screenshot I shared as they both highlight the importance of student participation and being involved in the classroom in one way or another.

My favorite part of the morning meeting video is this picture of them sitting down and talking about their weekends. I think it's extremely important to talk and or share about their lives so that the children realize they are not alone and they have each other. This allows for open discussion about anything so it could be their only safe space to share and talk. In the picture, the students are talking about their weekends and this one child was talking about the movie he saw. I think this is so important because all the children feel comfortable and safe to add to the conversation which is important because it sets the tone for the rest of the day. The student role is adding to the conversation and or talking about their weekend. The teacher's role in this is to facilitate the conversation and jump in if needed. The teacher's intention for this is to model how to have open discussions and set the tone for the day because everyone feels important and heard.

I enjoyed the 2nd video a lot. In this photo it showed how the class worked together to problem solve a solution to the math problem. This allows everyones voice to be heard and relay the message that everyone opinions are important. The student role was as a class try to figure out this problem. So everyone was adding their ideas. The teachers role was to write the students ideas down. The goal of this is to work on community in the classroom, and its a good team building activity.
