Rosa Parks is known as a key figure in the movement, though she was not the first figure to face consequences for not giving up their seats. Following her arrest in 1955, after she refused to give up her seat for a white man, the Montgomery Bus Boycotts started. Mass amounts of local Black Americans participated in the boycott, which was initially supposed to last one day but was extended indefinitely following its success.
