Thereafter a trial took place, reportedly costing 168 million pounds. 

Those involved included Rebekah Brooks, Andy Coulson, phone hacker Glen Mulcaire ,former editing manager Stuart Kuttner, former royal editor Clive Goodman and five others pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hack phones amongst many others. The jury was then discharged as it
failing to reach verdicts on charges that Coulson and Goodman committed misconduct in a public office by paying police officers for two royal directories.

Many laws were breached/infringed, including the Right to privacy law as well as intrusion because they hacked into people's phone to get information including that of  Milly Dowlers, Hugh Grant, Steve Coogan and many others. Contempt of court was breached as other police officers were paid off to keep things secret. Also, another example of this would be when the Sun, Daily Mirror and others alike  repeatedly labelled Christopher Jefferies as "strange"  and "weird", alluding to the suggesting that he killed Joanna Yates. This had the potential to change the whole outcome of the case. The Human Rights Act was breached when Sienna Miller's phone was hacked as it wasn't fair, she wasn't treated equally and was disrespected.
Founded in 1907, the NUJ stands for national union of journalists. Their aim is to improve the pay and conditions of their members and ensure that journalists are rewarded for their work. 
The PCC stands for the press complaints commission. They were a regulatory body for British Newspapers. People could send complaints there if a paper had breached the code of practice. It has since been replaced by IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organisation) which was launched in September 2014.
The Leveson Inquiry was launched in July 2011, after the phone hacking scandal. It was a public inquiry, led by Judge Lord Justice Leveson and was set by prime minister at the time to examine the ethics and practice of the press.  It delved into the relationship between the press and the public, including  phone hacking and other illegal goings-on. A series of hearings took place in 2011 and 2012. People involved included  David Cameron, actor Hugh Grant, author JK Rowling, Steve Coogan, Charlotte Church, Piers Morgan, Kate and Gerry MCcann among-st many others. At the end of the trial Judge Justice Leveson recommended that 
  • Newspapers should continue to be self-regulated - and the government should have no power over what they publish.
  • There had to be a new press standards body created by the industry, with a new code of conduct

In the aftermath of the inquiry, the PCC was discredited as it did little to investigate the phone hacking scandal so as a result  IPSO was put in place as a new regulatory body for newspapers with a new code of conduct.

In The Guardian, they use more complex language like ''ransacked'' and ''sheer'' whereas in the Daily Star they use more basic language like ''gangster''.
